Obituary

LEROY NATHANIEL BROWN (AGE 90) OF WASHINGTON, DC

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith ( 2 Timothy 4:7)

Leroy Nathaniel Brown (affectionately known as "Uncle Roy") was born November 03, 1929 in Bowman, South Carolina to the late Daniel Brown and Maggie Fogle Brown. He entered into eternal rest on January 13, 2020 at Suburban Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland.

Leroy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age and was a long standing member of Mt. Olive A.M.E Church in Holly Hill, South Carolina. He has also been a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and a Trustee of Faith Shepherd Baptist Church.

Leroy graduated from Bowman High School, Bowman, South Carolina in 1948. He moved to Washington, DC in 1949 where he remained a resident for 67 years.

He was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War era as a Communications Instructor. He received an Honorable Discharge and spent 5 years as an Army Reserve. Afterward, Leroy held various employment positions while attending the Veterans Trade Center for automobile mechanic training.

In 1956 he became a full-time Capitol Cab #272 taxi driver. In 1960 Leroy began working for the Department of the Navy in its transportation department. He retired in 2012 after 52 years. During this same time he worked part-time as a cab driver and eventually became the owner of 13 cabs which he rented out for nearly 30 years. During this time he met and married the late Katherine Clark Brown, divorced and fathered two wonderful daughters.

Leroy also served 15 years as a Reserve Police Officer during which time he was honored for bravery and his quick thinking at a life saving event and the apprehension of multiple criminals.

After retiring he worked as a part-time driver for a mental health facility and charter bus company. Although "Uncle Roy" was very unassumingly proud of his many accolades and honors, he was happiest jumping into one of his vans or trucks, driving to South Carolina to see his mom and spending time with his extensive family. Whenever he prepared to return to Washington, DC, he would load his truck with watermelons and collard greens to give/donate to family and friends. He was a caring and giving person who always had or could get for you just what you needed, but he would truly hold you accountable if you made him a promise. He loved his family dearly. He loved his friends as well. Leroy was a great neighbor in his community, as he would on many occasions handle snow and trash removal as needed. He is truly going to be missed by all who came to know him.

Leroy "Uncle Roy" is preceded in eternal rest by six brothers and sisters, Ceaser Brown, Elizabeth Brown Hollins, Bernice Brown Washington, Luther Brown, Francis Evelyn Brown and Robert Lee Brown.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories sons, Sheldon (Judy) Brown, Clinton, Maryland and Leon Brown, Oxon Hill, Maryland, daughters, Natalie Brown and Laverne Brown, Seattle, Washington, eight grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, 14 nieces and nephews, special friends to the family, Velma Gaskins, Barbara Clark and numerous relatives, friends and well wishers.

Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. ( 2 Timothy 4:8)
