Leah Astrid Swann, 52, of Waldorf, formerly of Pisgah, Maryland.

Leah's Journey

On September 10, 2022, family and friends said goodbye to Leah, age 52, a loving sister, aunt, partner and friend. She was named after the beautiful flower, astrid, by her parents. The youngest child of the family, raised in Pisgah, Maryland, "Asa," as she was affectionly known by her close friends, but "A" by her siblings and close relatives, was a sickly child at birth and spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital as an infant. Her strength eventually allowed her to overcome her illness even at such a young age.

She would grow up to become a star athlete in basketball at Lackey High School, class of 1988, which ultimately landed her a full scholarship at Morgan State University, in Baltimore, where she majored in Business Administration.

During her years at Morgan State, Asa pledged as a Delta of the Delta Sigma Theta Soriority. While an athletic honors scholar at Morgan, Asa was initiated into the Alpha Gamma Chapter in the fall of 1989. Asa was loved by the 28 women she pledged with and all those who knew her. You knew she entered the room because she lit it up with her humor, lightheartedness, grace and loving energy.

As a lively, gregarious, and beautiful woman, she was always the life of the party. She was also an activist who believed in the rights of the disenfranchised, which started in her days at Morgan State. She also loved the freedom of riding with the top down in her convertibles and owned at least two over the years.

As a young child, Asa was also a devoted pet lover. She loved and owned several pets over the years.

Over her years of employment, she had the chance to work with her father at Beretta, USA. She was with and supported her parents until their end. Her last place of employment was at KBR, a government contractor, where she was also admired by her many colleagues.

Asa is survived by her siblings: Jerianne Lewis, Robin Makle-Swann, Brennan, Patrick, Terrence, and Keith Swann. She is predeceased by her parents Neale A. and Dorothy M. Swann, and brother Andrew Makle. Asa will be interred next to her beloved mother, who she shared an indelible bond with until the end.
