Swann, Lawrence Cecil, (AGE 85) of Fort Washington, MD
On Thursday, October 31, 2013, Lawrence Cecil Swann (known as Lewis or LC), entered into eternal rest at Genesis Elder Health Care in Waldorf, Maryland.
Lewis was born on December 1, 1927 in Nanjemoy, Maryland to the late Lillian and Norman Swann, Sr. He was baptized at an early age at Mount Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. C. R. Alexander.
Lewis entered into the United States Army on March 28, 1946. He served as Private First Class and earned the title of Rifleman. During his tenure, he received a World War II Victory Metal and a Army of Occupational Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 8, 1947.
Lewis worked at the Naval Ordnance Station (NOS), Indian Head, Maryland where he held positions of Ordnanceman and Ordnance Equipment Repairer for the Ordnance Department. While employed at NOS, he received letters of commendation and Incentive Awards for Sustained Superior Performance. He retired from the United States Government in December 1984. After retiring from the federal government, he worked for the Prince George's County School System and the Bowie Senior Center as a Bus Driver.
He was an avid Washington Redskins fan. In his early years, Lewis had a passion for dancing the two step. Back in the day, family gatherings were always considered good times to Lewis as he loved to eat good old soul food. Because of his sense of style, he was often referred to as "Mr. Clean" and he loved to drive nice clean cars and trucks.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers; Robert, George, Clifton, Roy and Albert (Scottie); and two sisters, Genevieve and Merline Swann.
Lewis will be greatly missed by his family and leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted companion, Margaret Mansfield; two sons, Lawrence, Jr. and Ozzie Newsome. His siblings: four sisters, Evelyn, Audrey, Renetta and Mary Everdine; two brothers, Harold, Sr., and Norman, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Doris "Sugar", Estelle, Irene, Doris and Mary (Tang) Swann; brothers-in-law, Joseph Penny, Sr., and Reverend Earl Britt; three grandchildren, Juanetta and Lawrence Swann, II and Cedric Jordan; and 2 great-grandchildren, Larenai and John Swann and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
His Viewing will be held from 10:00am until time of Service 11:00am on Tuesday, November 12th in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640.
Interment, Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
