Karen Teruko Hayasaka, 63, a former administrative assistant with the National Academy of Public Administration in Washington, DC before raising a family, died suddenly at her home in Fort Washington, MD on Feb. 15 from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Karen Teruko Hayasaka was born in Philadelphia, PA, during 1948 and grew up in nearby Narberth, and graduated from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, PA in 1966. She attended Penn State Univ. and worked in the English Dept. at University Park. She moved to the Washington, D.C. metro area in 1973 and lived near Dupont Circle in downtown Washington, DC, then south Arlington, VA, before moving to Fort Washington where she lived for nearly 30 years.
Karen enjoyed taking long walks with her dachshund "Buddy," aerobic swimming pool exercising, keeping in touch with family and friends, and indoor and outdoor gardening. She was a Girl Scout leader and supporter of several girls ice skating groups, Capital Steps and the Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland Figure Skating Association. While her daughter was in school she was actively involved with parent groups at the Flintstone Elementary School and received a Citizens Concerned for a Cleaner County award from Prince George's County for contribution to, and involvement in, educational programs on litter control and recycling.
Survivors include her husband of nearly 35 years, John T. Webb of Fort Washington; a daughter, Lauren A. Webb-Franco of Ellicott City, MD; two grandchildren, Brandon C. Franco and Arabella R.E. Khan; two brothers, Steven S. Hayasaka of Clemson, SC and Richard K. Hayasaka of Timonium, MD, and many other surviving many relatives and friends, including numerous extended family members on the West Coast.
A memorial service to celebrate her life was held on Saturday, March 10th, 1pm in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.
