Obituary

Joyce Mae Eggleston, 75, of Fort Washington, Maryland.

Joyce Mae Eggleston was born on July 24, 1948 in Leesburg, Virginia to the late William Thornton and Evelyn Katrina Thornton. She departed this life on October 08, 2023 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD.

Joyce was educated in the DC Public School System. In 1971 she began her career at the District of Columbia Public School System, ascending the ladder to Facility Manager of the entire Washington Metropolitan area. She managed Building Services of DC Department of Parks and Recs and DC Public Schools. In 2012 she made one of the toughest decisions in her career, to retire after 41 years of exceptional service.

On August 10, 1965, Joyce was joined in matrimony to Albert C. Eggleston Sr. at Gaskin Memorial Church in Washington D.C. As a result of the union, the couple had two sons, Albert C. Eggleston Jr., and David Johnell Eggleston. She accepted Christ and has been a member in good standing with Ebenezer A.M.E Church for 18 years.

The family wishes to acknowledge Joyce's cherished family members who preceded her in death: Evelyn Thornton (mother), William Thornton (father), Charles Thornton (brother), Raymond Johnson (brother), Gladys Hogan (sister), Shirley Fletcher-Sumner (sister), Albert Charles Eggleston Sr., (spouse), Hubert Sumner, (brother-in-law), Henry Eggleston (brother-in-law), Walter Fletcher (brother-in-law), James Hawkins (brother-in-law), Morna Eggleston (sister-in-law), Sharon Fletcher (niece), Charles "Nookie" Thornton (nephew), and Ms. Catherine Wells (good girl friend).

Family was most important to her, and she really enjoyed all the family gatherings during special occasions and holidays. Her enthusiasm and passion for going to the casinos and the Washington Redskins cannot be denied. Whether there was road trip up 95 or staying local near the National Harbor, she was there with her good girlfriend,Vernell. When football season hit, she was decked out in her burgundy and gold outfits, her Native American head dress, and her Redskins shoes. She was a loyal season ticket holder and has been so since 1982. Joyce was a very kindhearted and generous woman in every sense of the word, often going out of her way to help any and every one.

God has truly blessed Joyce and she leaves to cherish her memories: her sons, Albert C. Eggleston Jr., and David Johnell Eggleston Sr., (Kimberly). Her brother, Matthew Conway Jr., Her nieces and nephews, Walter (Bud), Darlene (Little Bits), Charles (Nanny), Pamela (Jerome), William (Willie), Matthew (Steeple), Tyrone (Ty), Angela (Angie), Henry (Man-Man).
