Obituary

Joseph Thomas Swann (Age 77) of Waldorf, Maryland.

Joseph "Jodie" Thomas Swann was born on April 5, 1942, in Port Tobacco, Maryland, to the late Thomas and Mary Swann. Jodie fought a good fight, finished his journey and then received his heavenly crown as he transitioned on Sunday, November 10, 2019.

Jodie received his education from the Charles County public school system. After school, Jodie secured a job to help support his parents and siblings. Later in his early 30's, he met the love of his life, Nancy (Ree); they married and were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Kimberley and Terri (Muffy).

Jodie began his career working for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) in Temple Hills, Maryland. In 1979, he joined the National Park Service (NPS) with the U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, DC. This was his dream job as a mechanic and he was the preferred and sought after mechanic to repair the machinery. He was a very hardworking, dependable and reliable employee; he never missed a day of work. After 29 years of dedicated service and due to health challenges, Jodie retired from NPS in August 2008.

Jodie's trademark was "Family First" and he demonstrated this in his love and support for them. There was no mountain too high or valley too low, that would stop him from meeting the wants and needs of his beloved Ree, Kim and Muffy and his grandchildren. Whenever Kim and Muffy would ask him for money, he would quote the Fats Domino song, " I Hear You Knocking, But You Can't Come In ;" of course, he would give them the money. He enjoyed the fun times with his grandkids, Jalisa, Quintrell, King, Faith, Joziah and Ariah, trips to B&J's for ice cream, rides in his pick-up truck and playing with them around the house.

His generosity, kindness and loyalty were also extended to other family members and friends, he was known as the family mechanic. Working on cars was Jodie's passion and he could do anything the mechanics at the dealership could do. His mechanic shop was a car ramp he built himself behind the Barber family's house on Berry Road. Jodie taught his nephews how to do an oil change, change brake pads, rebuild a transmission and change out a motor; he knew how to do it all. The nephews enjoyed their race track experience with him as well. Everybody knew, Jodie only owned Ford vehicles. Most people wave goodbye when leaving someplace, but he had a special way of saying goodbye. Whenever he left Proctor's Inn, he would speed out of the parking lot onto the road, spin around doing donuts, leaving nothing but skid marks and smoke!

Jodie was also known for smoking his King Edward cigars, eating lemon pies and drinking Black Label beer, Dr. Pepper or Root beer sodas. He also enjoyed hard candy, but Kim wouldn't let him eat it for health reasons. However, the family would sneak it to him before she would get home from work. He could spend all day watching his favorite Westerns with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and others.

Jodie was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Rosemarie Swann; parents, Thomas and Mary Swann; brothers, Paul, Francis, and John; sister, Doris; his great-grandson, Messiah; father and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Loretta Laura Barber; brother-in-law, Sam Barber; and sister-in-law, Delia (Annie) Briscoe. He leaves to cherish his memories, two beloved daughters, Kimberley Goldring (Tony) and Terri Swann; four beloved grandchildren, Jalisa (Ron), Quintrell, King, Faith; two beloved great-grandchildren, Joziah and Ariah; his siblings, Annie, Leander (Mary), James (Irby), Elizabeth (Sonny), Charles (Fay), Mary (Earl), Catherine (John); his in-laws John Bennie (Sylvia), Steve (Robin), William, Loretta, Mary, Ruthie, Vivian, and Ruth Barber. Also to cherish his memories are a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
