SPRIGGS, JOSEPH (AGE 93) OF WASHINGTON, D.C.

Joseph Spriggs was born in Washington, DC on June 26, 1929, to the late Francis and Lillian Spriggs. He was the second of five children. Joseph made his transition into eternal rest at Future Care Pineview Senior Care in Clinton, MD on November 2, 2022.

Joseph, affectionately known as Joe, was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System. He joined the Army in 1947 and served as a Quartermaster until 1950. It was in 1949 that Joe became a proud father with the birth of his first son Wilbur Jackson. Later, he was blessed to become a proud father for the second time with the birth of his son Wayne Hairston in 1966.

Joe had a very outgoing and fun personality which served him well in his job as a Taxi Driver after the military. This job allowed him to meet people from all over. It was in Washington, DC that Joe met and married Mary Magdaline "Mag" Canty. They mutually parted ways, and he later met and married Etta Mae Bullard in 1979. Joe and Etta were married 16 years until Etta gained her wings November 28, 1995.

After some years, Joe and Mag rekindled their relationship and married a second time. It was during this time that Joe gave his life to Christ and was baptized. Mag and Joe were married 24 years until she gained her wings February 28, 2021.

Joe was always entertaining, lively and definitely the life of the party.  He was well loved in the community. Whenever Joe was around he always had a joke or a story to tell you, and though his jokes were not always funny, he always found a way to make you laugh or smile. He shared his love with family and friends. Joe lived a full and blessed life, and will be truly missed by all.

Joe leaves to cherish his memories: son, Wayne Hairston (mother- the late, Frances Hairston); grandsons Ronald, Wayne II, Tyrell; granddaughter Precious; 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Lillian Spriggs; sisters Bernice Peguese, Frances Barnes and Mary Thompson; brother James Spriggs; and son Wilbur Jackson.

His viewing will be held from 10:00am until time of service 11:00am, Monday, November 21, 2022, Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.
