Obituary

Joseph Lamont Smith, Sr. of Waldorf, MD transitioned August 29, 2023.

Born in Washington, DC to the late Joseph Alton Smith "Wimpy" and Hannah Corrine Simmons Smith "Billie" on March 10, 1949. Joseph affectionately known as Lonnie was raised in Pisgah, Maryland. He was educated in The Charles County School system and graduated from Pomonkey High School. Joseph married Victoria Marie Lee-Smith "Vicki" and from their union 2 daughters, Paula Smith (Bruce) and Jovanna Smith; one son Joseph Lamont Smith, Jr. (Sherrell) was born.

After graduating high school, Lonnie started his career as an ejection seat mechanic, building ejection seat motors that helped pilots eject from their jet's safety. In his 39 years working at The Base in Indian Head, MD, he took pride in his work. Actually, one of the ejection seat motors that he built helped save one of the pilots that was in The Gulf War. Unfortunately, he had to take a brief break because he was drafted in the Army to be a part of the Vietnam War, 1969-1971. Fortunately, he survived, returned home, and continued working on the base in Indian Head, MD.

Joseph also enjoyed watching sports of all kinds. He was known to participate in playing sports at the tender age of 12. He pitched his first no hitter baseball game and played on the baseball team for his Church St. Mary's Star of The Sea. Speaking of baseball, he was known for being an extremely good pitcher for the Pisgah Boo Boo's. Lonnie also played on a softball team called Roots if anyone remembers these days.

His family loved eating the shrimp he cooked with his secret sauce that he made. Those shrimps would make you crave for more! He loved listening to people rave over his shrimp, especially his grandchildren calling them Pop-Pop shrimp. Whoever tasted those shrimps, you know exactly what we are talking about. Joseph also enjoyed listening to Oldies but Goodies. One of his favorites was The Isley Brothers from the 70's to the current Ron Isley.

Lonnie a kind-hearted man loved family. He was a person that looked out for many yards, cutting their grass or being a helping hand if he could help with something. He was a man of wisdom, a perfectionist and a neat fanatic! There was never any sloppy work from him. Lonnie was a quiet man beautiful inside and out!

Lonnie is survived by his wife Victoria Marie Lee-Smith "Vicki"; 2 daughters, Paula Smith (Bruce) and Jovanna Smith; one son Joseph Lamont Smith, Jr. (Sherrell); 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren that are soon to be born; brother Cornell Posey; sisters Angela Davis "Angie" (Buck) and Iris Smith; aunt Irma Gray "Chick" (Sonny); uncle Benny Smith; 2 nieces, 4 nephews and many great nieces nephews and so many cousins; 2 goddaughters Pamela Hall-Smith; bonus brother and special cousin John Gray (Jaydee); and special nephew whom he cherished like a grandson Brendon.

He was preceded in death by  his father the late Joseph Alton Smith "Wimpy" and the late Hannah Corrine Simmons-Smith "Billie" and brother Derek Allen Smith, Sr. "Ricky".

To have Lonnie, now that you called him home, we are here to celebrate the life of Joseph Lamont Smith, Sr., "Good googa mooga I'm Out!"
