Hawkins, Joseph Roy, Jr. (Age 74) of Bryans Road, Maryland
Joseph Roy Hawkins, Jr., better known as "Sonny," departed this life on Saturday, April 17, 2016 at Sage Point Nursing Home in La Plata, Maryland. Sonny was united in marriage to Mayzell E. Short. From this union were three children: Amanda Hawkins, William R. Short (Susan), and Webster Lee (Debra).
Sonny was born on January 27, 1942 to the late Joseph R. Hawkins, Sr., and Agnes V. Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by his sisters Delores Pickeral, Regina Tolson, and his brother Wesley Johnson.
He joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged after completing honorable years of service to our community. He worked at Arlington National Cemetery as a machine operator and retired after thirty years of service.
He enjoyed cutting grass, fishing, working on the family farm, watching television, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Amanda Hawkins; two sons, William R. Short (Susan), and Webster Lee (Debra); six grandchildren, Donny Short, Ebony Cooks (Eric), Tevin Lee, Teejay Short, Rytashia Warren, and Iris Lee; five great-grandchildren, Jaliah Warren, Natalia Lewis, Elijah Cooks, Eryn Cooks and Krysten Short; two sisters, Barbara Makle-Ivey and Phyllis Cole, one brother William Hawkins; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Cooper, Adell Pope (John), Diane Short (Cecil); five brothers-in-law, James Short, Jr., Thomas Short, Sr. (Betty), Harold Short (Hazel), Spencer Short, and Bennie Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
His viewing will be held from 9am until time of service 11am on Saturday, April 30th in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment 9:30am, Monday, May 2, 2016, Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
