John Wesley Thompson, 99 of Waldorf, Maryland formerly of Port Tobacco, Maryland.
Obituary
John W. Thompson of Port Tobacco, Maryland departed his earthly life on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. He was born on July 8, 1920 to the late James Ulysses and Prudence Richmond Graham Thompson. He was the 4th of 8 children. He received his education thru the Orange County School System in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
He was affectionately known as Daddy, Pop, Uncle Johnnie and Mr. T by his loving family and friends. His grandchildren and great grandchildren called him Pop Pop. He was a devoted father and grandfather. He would move the world for his family!
He started working as an orderly at UNC Hospital where he met the love of his life L. Lorraine Holman. They were married on June 14, 1944 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. They relocated to Washington DC eventually settling in Port Tobacco Maryland. He was gainfully employed at Harbor DeVenture where he was a chauffeur. He went on to have a successful career with the Investment Company Institute. He retired after working 17 years in charge of the Printing Department.
His favorite past times were watching Walker Texas Ranger, The Price is Right and Family Feud. He loved to smoke his cigars and talking with "The Ladies"! His favorite scripture was Ephesians 6:1&4. He just loved helping and being around people. If anybody needed anything he would make sure that you had it! He was a faithful member of Bee Hive Lodge No.66 F.&A.M. State of Maryland for over 62 years and he was also a member of Corinthian Chapter No. 20, Royal Arch Masons. At the time of his passing, he was Bee Hive's oldest living member.
He was baptized at an early age at Harvey's AME Chapel in Hillsborough, North Carolina.John was raised in a Christian home where it was instilled in him to put God First in all you do. John was taught the the true meaning of hard work, honesty and a strong work ethic. John was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Marbury, Maryland under the leadership of Rev. Ball. He moved his membership to Zion Baptist Church in Welcome, Maryland in 1971 under the leadership of Rev. Willis S. Walls. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and member of the Choir. He enjoyed attending the Men's Ministry (Band of Brothers) Fellowship meeting.
He leaves to cherish his memories: Daughters, Linda Thompson, Dee Dee Gaddy (DuWayne), Son, Percy Thompson, Sr. (Wanda), Paulette Tolliver, Gonnie Tolliver and Theresa Scott. Grandchildren: Jonathan Thompson, Fanescia Watson (Mark), Percy Thompson Jr., Tameka Johnson (Larry), Gisele Miller, Loni Alston (Jerald) and Tenay Hubbard (Norman), Kameshia Tolliver, Kamashae Tolliver and Davita Tolliver. 23 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. Brother, Clinton Thompson, Efland, North Carolina, Sisters-in Laws, Kuma Thompson Carrboro, North Carolina, Betty Foushee, Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Annie Lee Thompson, Durham, North Carolina. God daughter, Pamela Dorsey. Special friend,Sallie Hendricks and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, James Ulysses and Prudence Richmond Graham Thompson, Wife, L. Lorraine Thompson, Grandaughter, Gisette Miller, Sisters, Josephine Russell, Gertrude Harris, Lunary Edwards and Annie Reaves. Brothers, Lewis Thompson and James Thompson.
Viewing, 9:00 a.m., Saturday, May 9, 2020 until Private Service at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.
Interment, Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, 8105 Annapolis Woods Road, Welcome, Maryland 20693.
