John Alton Proctor, 89 of Waldorf, Maryland.
John Alton Proctor, more affectionately called "Alton" departed this life peacefully on May 23, 2025 at his son's home in Brandywine, Maryland. He was born February 25, 1936 in Washington D.C. to the late James E. Proctor and the late Mary Irene Proctor.
Alton grew up in Prince George's County and attended Prince George's County schools.
On November 2, 1958, he married Cecelia Elaine Richardson, from that union six children were born. Alton worked as a Skilled Laborer at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission until he retired. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, watching sports (especially basketball) and being with family. He would always say "I have been retired longer than I have worked" and he was always 39, no matter how old he was.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia Elaine; brothers, James "Squench" and Joseph "Joe-Joe"; half sisters, Mary "Merr-wee", Mary "Arlene" and Elizabeth Agnes; half brothers, James Edward, John William and Joseph Thomas Proctor.
He leaves to cherish his memory, six children: Joyce, Devine, Bruce, Wanda, Mark "Rodney" and Rella; sister, Jean (James "Dickey"), brothers, Bernard "Hungry" (Jane) and Robert "Peachy"; thirteen grandchildren, Derek Thompson, Tony Proctor, Joy Thompson Neal, Shameka Gutrick, Marquis Proctor, Bryan Proctor, Carl "CJ" Gutrick, Jr., Mark Proctor, Jr., Shannon Graham, Keoshia Proctor, Tierra Proctor, Scottie Law Jr. and Justin Proctor; twenty great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two daughters-in-law, Valerie and Darlene; one son-in-law, Scottie Law; a special friend, Bertha Fields and a host of relatives and friends.
Viewing, Monday, June 2, 2025 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.; Mass of Christian Burial, 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 4590 St. Josephs Way, Pomfret, Maryland 20675. Interment, Church Cemetery.
