IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John Lamont
Gibson
January 2, 1989 – September 21, 2023
John Lamont Gibson who we affectionately called "Little Johnny," or "Lil J" was born in Washington, D.C. on January 2, 1989, to John Graham and LaTisha Gibson. He was the eldest of three children and was raised in Maryland. John received his high school GED from Bowling Brook Preparatory School in 2005 and continued to earn college credits at Carroll Community College in 2006. He graduated from Career Technical Institute in 2010 with a Microsoft Certified System Administrator Certification. In 2012, John attended The National Capital Region Year Up Program, where he received several awards, appeared on Channel 7 News broadcast to discuss the program, and became an intern at ASIS International in 2013.
As a youth, John attended Church of the Great Commission and accepted Jesus Christ. He rededicated his life as an adult. John was an intelligent, creative, and handsome man, who was unapologetically hilarious! His smile was infectious, and he was a conversationist that never ran out of words. John told stories that pulled you into his world, due to his animated tone and he forced you to laugh. His upbeat energy was unmatched, and you could not stay mad at him for too long.
Whether John was rocking a close cut, his afro, or cornrows, everyone knew when he stepped in the room. He loved playing chess, video games,
Mortal Combat, Friday the 13th, and was a Super Mario Bros Head. John became interested in Mario Brothers by watching his mother play and they often played together. John enjoyed watching The Boondocks, Sci-Fi, horror movies, wrestling and his favorite football team, The Washington Commanders. John was a grill master and he cooked wonderful meals for everyone to enjoy. He loved music, making beats, writing lyrics, and rapping about the struggles he had encountered. John set up a recording studio in his grandmother Carolyn's basement and charged by the hour for studio time. John gleamed with excitement when he shared his music with family and friends. He was crazy about his dog Riddick, which he shared an unbreakable bond and could not be compared to a human connection.
On September 20, 2015, John married his best friend Monica in The Virgin Islands and they shared many happy memories. John enjoyed traveling with his wife and two other couples and they called themselves, "The Wolf Pack."
John's life changed when he became a father to Johnathan Gibson on August 18, 2020; he was overjoyed and shared the news with everyone. He was a loving and devoted father who was amazing with his son, whom he called "My Lil Man."
John shared a special bond with his Grandma Carolyn, who raised him, shared priceless memories, and exhibited unconditional love. He loved his grandmother and she referred to John as her personal handyman at twelve years old. John could put together TV stands and small cabinets without first reading the directions. He went to church with Grandma Carolyn and participated in the children's choir, served as a youth usher and a security helper.
He shared a precious relationship with both his great-grandmothers Naomi (deceased) and Zeola (deceased) with whom he spent special moments. John adored Traci Rollins-Johnson, his godmother, who consistently encouraged him and stayed connected into adulthood. He shared a brotherhood with his cousin Phillip (Phil), and they spent countless hours working, exchanging lessons learned, playing chess, video games and listening to music. John and his Uncle Troy had an amazing bond and often came to his uncle for counsel. John and his brother Darren spoke daily, and shared moments filled with love, laughter and playing video games. He loved his niece Darrian, who encouraged him to get Nintendo Switch and they competed every chance they got. John and Keno (best friend) became brothers over 17 years ago and started a rap group called "POD." A day did not go by without them speaking and they spent countless good times together. They often told each other, "We are all we got," they never said goodbye, but ended the call with, "One Love." John faced numerous adversities with resilience, but his family and friends always supported him.
John enjoyed driving for Lyft, Uber Eats and Door Dash because of the flexibility it offered. He was an amazing swimmer who worked at Six Flags Amusement Park (2006) and The Sports and Learning Complex (2009) as a lifeguard and often bragged about the many lives he saved each day. John worked in Food Services at The Fort Myer Commissary and sold perfume for a small company. In 2004 John started working at Perfect Lawns with his cousin Phillip as a Landscaper Assistant, for several years and learned how to transform a yard!
John had many memorable moments with family. John's parents loved him dearly and over the years John became closer to them and they bonded as a family! John's father always kissed his forehead when he saw him. John celebrated birthdays with his grandfather Andre and his father, in which their birthdays were days apart. John and his father loved to shop together, spend hours on the phone, and eat at various restaurants. He especially remembered Father's Day (2021), as a new father, which he spent with his grandfather Andre, his father, Uncle Troy, and cousin Alex. John celebrated Christmas 2022 with his son, mother, (who often called him a mama's boy because he would lay his head on her lap), and the Gibson family. John was so proud when his father met his son Johnathan for the first-time last spring. John loved his family!
John was preceded in death by his grandfather Andre Marbley, and two great-grandmothers Naomi Young and Zeola Gibson. He leaves to cherish precious memories his son, Johnathan Gibson (mother-Lameshia Price), father, John Lamont Graham, mother, LaTisha Gibson, grandmother, Carolyn Marbley, two grandfathers, John William Graham, and James Gaskins (Marsha), two brothers, Darren Gibson (deceased) (Aaliyah), Jabari Graham, one uncle, Troy Marbley, one devoted great aunt, Louise Battle, one niece, Darrian Gibson, one nephew, K'Acey Gibson, his best friend and brother, Kennan (Keno) Powell, his estranged wife, Monica Gibson, and a host of great uncles, great aunts, cousins, and close friends.
