IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan Carthenia
Hampton
February 11, 1944 – February 15, 2022
Joan Carthenia (Derricotte) Hampton, 78 of Temple Hills, Maryland.
Profile of Life
Joan Carthenia Hampton was born, February 11, 1944 in Golansville, VA (Caroline County) in the home of her late grandparents, Sylvester and Marie Derricotte, who loved her so much that they kept and raised her through her early childhood until she left for DC in 1954, to live with her parents, the late Joshua and Laurecer Howard.
Joan attended DC public schools, Birney Elementary, Douglass Jr. High and Anacostia High, but dropped out of school early. She married the late Henry Turner Hampton, Jr. on January 1, 1960. From this union two children were born, Linda Michelle and Henry Turner, III.
At a later date, she went back to school to get her GED, then went on to achieve a 30 year career with the Department of State. She was a very dedicated employee and received numerous awards. Many of her coworkers became lifelong friends. As life went on, some of them preceded her in death (lovingly, Annie Ruth Maddox, along with dear personal friends, Barbara J. Williams, Patricia Ogden, and Barbara Jones).
Joan loved and adored family and family gatherings, Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays and such. With everybody bringing their favorite dishes and her cakes, sweet potato pies, bread and corn puddings, and potato salad.
Joan never lost her country roots and always enjoyed going back home to her family there who she dearly loved, especially her best buddy, Clara Derricotte (aunt) of Fredericksburg, VA. They were close in age and thick as butter. Others were her dear late aunt Juanita Banks of Richmond, VA and beloved late uncle Joseph Derricotte of Glen Allen, VA, as well as a host of other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was sometimes teased for her love of country music. She always said "if they listened to it long enough, they would end up humming the tune", and they did. She also loved working her puzzles, Sudoku, Washington Post Second Glimpse, and many more.
Peacefully on Tuesday evening, February 15, 2022 at her home and surrounded by her family, Joan C. Hampton transitioned to eternal life.
Her son Henry T. Hampton, III preceded her in death. She leaves to morn her loving and dedicated daughter Linda M. Smith (Wylie), four grandchildren – Larry D. Brown, III, Nichole M. Bennett, Tyler J. Smith and Erica J. McCoy, two great grandchildren - Karter Lee and Kamara Strowbridge, four sisters – Jacqueline Smith (Frank), Justine Keitt (Bryant), Jewel A. Howard, Joann Hunter Hall (Thaddeus) and one brother – Joshua Howard, III, (who, in her latter months helped to take very good care of her) several nieces, nephews and cousins and one aunt – Clara Derricotte. Two brother in-laws – Robert Hampton (Dorris), Carleton Hampton (Deborah), in addition, several devoted childhood friends - Ruth and Freddie Elliott, William (Donald) Cox, his daughter Kimberly Cox, Patricia Stewart Brown, and Shirley White – and many other special friends of whom she grew to be very fond of through the years.
She loved us all unconditionally.
