Obituary

Thompson, Jerome Frederick (Age 82) of Ghana, West Africa

Jerome Frederick Thompson (affectionately called Romie and King Jerome) quietly and peacefully departed this life early Saturday morning on November 29, 2025, while asleep at his home in Ghana, West Africa.

Jerome was one of two children born to Samuel and Gwendolyn Thompson. Jerome attended Charles County public schools graduating from Pomonkey High School in 1961. He attended and graduated from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with a degree in accounting. He served in the United States Army for two years. Jerome worked for Pepco as an Accountant for many years and later after retirement became a contract consultant for the federal government.

Jerome gave his life to Christ at a young age, and he attended with his parents Metropolitan United Methodist Church, Indian Head, MD. He later became a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he used his accounting skills in the Finance Office and was a member of the Men of Grace Ministry. While a member at Grace United Methodist Church, Jerome travelled several times on Mission trips to Ghana which started his dream of moving there. In 2022 he was diagnosed with 3A non-cell lung cancer for which he went through a series of chemo and radiation treatments. His treatments were successful and he was in remission in 2004. Jerome was so excited for this diagnosis and declared that he would follow his dream and move to Ghana, West Africa. He planned with assistance from his two sister-cousins to make the move, Jerome cleared out his home in Fort Washington, Maryland, placed his house on the market and arranged for his belongings to be shipped by cargo to Ghana. Once in Ghana, Jerome had his home built to his perfection and lived like a “King” as he called himself. He made Ghana his home for 23 years. Jerome was an active member of the Triple 8 Organization and very active in the political arena. He would travel back to the United States yearly to visit. He decided on his last visit to Maryland in 2024 that he would not be returning to the United States.

Jerome admired and enjoyed being around his family on both sides. His humorous personality made him the life of the party. He didn’t have to know you to befriend you and have a conversation. He could talk and have you laughing even though sometimes aggravating to some, but his presence commanded your attention. He also would give good advice to his family and friends in some of the conversations. Jerome loved travelling and on each of his visits back here he went to Colorada to visit his long-time friends Ed and Mary Holland. Jerome was also most noticeable for his sharp dressing no matter the occasion. He always looked like he had stepped out of GQ magazine. He loved to dance, listen to jazz music and dine out at the finest restaurants. He always bragged about his dancing ability and while at Pomonkey High School and UMES he was a “drum major” for the marching band.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Gwendolyn, brother Roy Thompson, and niece Symone R. Thompson. He leaves to cherish his memory: nephew Shawn Thompson, nieces: Robyn Fletcher and Charlitta Ayala, Goddaughter Tomegee Martin, two sister cousins: Rosella Martin and Deborah Posey-Thomas, long-time friends: Ed and Mary Holland of Colorado, Yvonne Hairston-Branson (70 years of friendship) who was always at his side in Ghana, along with his Ghana friends, and a host of other relatives and friends.
