His Journey
March 29, 1953 – February 4, 2020
James Henry Washington, Jr. was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Rachel A. and James H. Washington, Sr. on March 29, 1953. He transitioned to glory on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 4, 2020.
At a very early age he gave his life to Christ and joined Capital View Baptist Church in his community. During recent years, he enjoyed regularly attending services at Campbell A.M.E. Church.
James, fondly known as Junie, received his formal education in the District of Columbia public school system and was placed in an accelerated academic program. While attending Spingarn Senior High School he participated on the track team where he continued to excel in the sport of track and field. After graduation from Spingarn High School he received a scholarship to Delaware State University. While attending Delaware State he proudly pledged to become a member of the Grove Phi Grove Fraternity.
He served as a self-employed contractor, acquiring outstanding contracting skills passed down from his father. Junie was very family oriented and loved being in the company of his family. He had a sweet and mild temperament, loved traveling with his family and always looked forward to family vacations and outings. Junie was an avid reader. He loved collecting comic books and taking long motorcycle rides.
Junie was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Stith. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Temika Hicks; granddaughter, Tori Hicks; two sisters Linda Yancey, Anita Washington; five nephews, Tyrone Jenkins, Don Jenkins, Keith Stith, Anthony Yancey II, Aaron Yancey; and a host of great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
Junie will be greatly missed but will always be remembered for his kind spirit and friendliness to others. We take comfort in knowing that he truly loved the Lord.
