Dr. James Vincent Short, Sr. Ed.D, 58 of Waldorf, Maryland.

Obituary

James Vincent Short Sr. (Mann) was born on February 6, 1959, to the late James Clinton Short and Martha Anne Short he departed this life peacefully on March 21, 2017. James was educated in the Charles County public school system. As a young child, James developed a love for education and sports. James attended and graduated from Lackey High School, where he lettered in four sports; basketball, baseball, tennis and football. James was most passionate about his love for basketball and football. During his senior year of high school, James was all SMAC first team for basketball and football and was named SMAC most outstanding player for basketball.

Due to his scholastic and athletic accomplishments, he earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of Richmond, in Richmond VA, to play football. James was the first black quarterback to play at the University of Richmond. James received a Bachelor's degree in Economics, a Master's degree from Bowie State University, and in May 2016, James received his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Delaware State University.

On January 5, 1980, James married Beverly Ann Honor and to this union three children were born one son James II., and twin daughters Jennifer and Jennell; one grandson Gabriel Short.

Early in his adult life, James served in the National Guard and worked as manager in the fast food industry. Soon after leaving his management position in the fast food industry, James accepted a position working for the Charles County Public School system as a Special Education Teacher and varsity football coach at Thomas Stone High School. James continued to climb the ladder through the educational system. He held various professional titles throughout his career as an educator. While at Thomas Stone High School, he held the positions of Varsity Football, Varsity Track and Field coach, Junior Varsity boys' basketball ball coach, Junior Varsity Girls Basketball coach and Athletic Director. While working at Montgomery Blair High School, he held the titles of Special Education Teacher, Football Coach, School Store Manager, and Vice Principal of Night and Saturday School. He returned to the Charles County public school system where he became the Principal of his beloved Alma Mater, Lackey High School. James also served as the President of the Maryland and National Associations of Secondary School Principals. After several years as principal, James accepted a promotion to the Charles County, Board of Education to be the Director of Hearings Officer and Court Liaison. In early January 2017, James was the first person to be inducted in the Lackey Hall of Fame as both a player and administrator.

He was preceded in death by his parents James C. Short & Martha A. Short one brother Alan Short. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife Beverly; his son James II. (Deatrice), twin daughters Jennifer and Jennell, one grandson Gabriel and one granddaughter Chloe Reeder; three sisters Lavelle Simpkins (Tony); Constance Rowe (Thson); Darcel Rankins; brother-in-law Edward Honor; three nephews Vincent, De'Metri, Joshua; three nieces Tonia, ZaNiyah, Angel; nine aunts J. Cecilia Spinks, Delores Silliday(Wilson), Yvonne Glascoe, Viola Pointer, Cynthia Brown(Tony), June Brown, Kim Brown, Shelley Wilburn(Mark), Tracy Mason; one great-aunt, Hattie Whigham Five uncles Charles G. Short, W. Cecil Short (Mary Jane) Carlton Brown(Judy), Curtis Brown(Marquita), & Owen Briscoe(Sue); one great-uncle, James Smallwood Jr.; and a brother Nate Collins (Wanda), godchildren; Tara Turner, Nate Collins Jr., Tabryna Taylor, Carter Copeland & a host of other relatives. Please forgive any oversights, he touched so many and you were equally as loved.
