Obituary

James Nathaniel Proctor departed this life, August 16, 2021.  James, affectionately known as "Sonny," was born, September 12, 1931, to the late Howard and Cecelia Proctor of Nanjemoy, Maryland.

Sonny was educated in the Charles County public school system.  Sonny enlisted in the United States Army.  While in the Army, he acquired the skills of handyman, plumber, and electrician.  Sonny was a self-made businessman by becoming owner/operator of his own dump truck (Big Red).  He was employed at Pepco for 10 years.  Sonny also managed the family bar (Proctor's Inn) on the weekends.  Sonny loved telling stories about Proctor's Inn.  Sonny went beyond ordinary measures to ensure all needs of his family was top priority.

He took pride in making people feel at home, even complete strangers who gave him the name of "Uncle Sonny."  Sonny loved his sons, daughters, and grandchildren, often bragging that they got their smarts and good looks from him.  Sonny, known as the "Crabman," loved being on the water.  Up until his passing, Sonny would still report to the pier as if it was his call.  Sonny was a true fan of his sports teams, the Washington Redskins, as well as the DMV Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles.  Sonny loved playing cards with family and friends while having a cold beer.

Sonny married the love of his life, Ollie Mae Proctor, from their blessed union of 66 years, six children were born:  Brenda (Steve), Roscoe (Lisa), Eugene (Tanya), Sharon, Tony (Beverly) and Mark (Tico).

Sonny is survived by his wife, Mae, two sisters, Elizabeth and Alice whom he cherished.  He also leaves to cherish his memory, grands, great grands, great, great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

His Viewing will be, 10:00 am, until time of Service, 11:00 am, Saturday, August 28, 2021, in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.  Interment, 1:45 pm, Monday, August 30, 2021, Maryland Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623.
