Matthews, James Lawrence, Jr. (Age 70) of Clinton, Maryland.
On Sunday, December 23, 2012, James Lawrence Matthews Jr. passed from this world into eternal life at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Maryland.
Lawrence was born October 14, 1942 in Port Tobacco, Maryland to the late James Lawrence and Mary Helen Matthews. He was educated at Charles County Public Schools. He met and married Veronica Elaine Smoot in October 1966; together they built a life and family in the Washington Metropolitan area. From this union, they had four children; Cynthia, Richard, Erica and Derek.
He worked for the federal government at Health and Human Services for 43 years before retiring in 2006. In retirement, Lawrence enjoyed taking care of his children's yard work, as well as his own and cruising his neighborhood as part of his community neighborhood watch.
Lawrence was known for giving special nicknames to every person in his life.
His past times included drinking coffee with other retirees at the local 7-Eleven and "people watching" with his wife at the McDonalds in WalMart. But his all-time favorite pastime was playing spades on Yahoo with over 40,000 games played.
Lawrence is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Veronica ("Laine"), sons; Blake Campbell, Richard Matthews, Derek Matthews, daughters; Cynthia Carter, Erica Williams, grandsons; Marc, Andre and Jared Carter, Darius and Darren Matthews, granddaughters; Giovonne, Gabrielle and Giselle Williams, brothers; Bobby, Leroy and Louis Matthews, sister; Christine Tarpley, brother-in-law Mike Holt, sisters-in-law Marion McCray, Barbara Holt, Joan Matthews, sons-in-law; Robert Carter and George Williams, nephews; Eddie Smoot, Ronald Smoot, Joseph Smoot, nieces; Melissa Glover, Rita White, Christina Jones, great-nephews; Robert Grant III, Rodney Grant, Joseph Smoot Jr., great-nieces; Brenee Ruffin, Isis White, Indya White, Christiana Jones, and a host of relatives and friends.
Viewing, 10 a.m. until time of Service, 11 a.m. , Friday, December 28, 2012 in the Chapel of THORNTON Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland.
Interment, Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton, Maryland.
