Obituary
JAMES JOSEPH BAROUR (Jimmy), was born in Bushwood, Maryland on August 22, 1936. He was the second child to the late William Francis and Mary Margaret Barbour. On March 10, 2016, Jimmy, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, peacefully went home to be with the Lord.
Jimmy was educated in the Charles County public school system. On February 3, 1959, he enlisted in the United States Army. He completed basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, then moved to Fort Benning, Georgia, where he attended Advanced Infantry Training and became an expert Rifleman. His first and only permanent duty station was Bremerhaven, Germany. While in Germany, Jimmy was a member of a Rod and Gun Club. When he was not on duty, he spent some of his leisure time fishing and practicing his marksmanship. Jimmy received a Good Conduct Medal for his military service. After leaving the Army; he returned to his home town where he helped out on the farm. He became an avid gardener and enjoyed planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables which he shared with family and friends. Jimmy worked at Earl's Truck stop prior to finding permanent employment with S. Freedman and Sons where he worked as a warehouseman for 32 years. He was a loyal union member of Local 639 and served as Shop Steward.
On the hot summer day of August 30, 1985, Jimmy married the love of his life Annie Adams after many years of courtship. Jimmy and Annie continued their blissful relationship with a 30-year marriage. Together they helped raise their niece Stephanie (Janie) Hutchins.
Jimmy loved animals. Over the years he had several Pomeranian dogs and several cats including, Lucky, his current cat. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed watching sports especially the Redskins and Nationals. In his earlier days, he would attend local Sunday baseball games in Charles County. He also enjoyed sharing stories and spending time with family and friends. His sense of humor brought laughter, tears of joy and gladness to everyone who knew him.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his wife Annie, his parents William and Margaret, one son, James Barbour, one brother, John Melvin Barbour (Peanut), one sister, Lydia Ann Barbour (Bird) and one grandson, Aaron Proctor.
Jimmy leaves to cherish his memory his children Mary Ellen (Mark) Wilson, Andrea (Jerome) Proctor, Joseph Barbour, Francis (Michele) Reed, Joseph "Jo-Jo" Thomas and Penny Smothers; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five brothers: William (Nellie), Thomas, David, Charles and Robert (Natasha) Barbour; three sisters: Mary Jenifer, Alice Theresa Barbour and Thelma (Louis) Bowman; three Brothers-in-law: John, Edward, and Francis Adams; three Sisters-in-law: Margie Posey, Clara Mae Thomas, and Alice Waters; a devoted nephew Kevin Barbour and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
