IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jacqueline
Pettie-Lucas
July 7, 1947 – April 17, 2020
Jacqueline Pettie-Lucas (Age 72) of Flushing, New York
She gave with no bounds; whether it was a meal, a hug or infectious joy, she greeted the world with her warm smile and knowing eyes. With profound sadness we announce the passing of Jackie, our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She left us on April 17, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19, while sleeping peacefully at Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York, New York. She was 72 years old.
Jackie's story is one rooted in family and love. She was born in Harlem, New York to loving parents, Kathleen and Clifton, II. The eldest of three children, the family eventually moved to a tight-knit community in Jamaica, Queens. It is there where Jackie developed into the daughter, sister, friend and mother that we all adore. Queens became the center of her world and in turn, was where she was centered - a city girl at heart who loved music, dancing, and shopping.
A proud product of New York public schools, Jackie graduated from Long Island City High school. She passed on her passion for learning to her twins, Daree (Michele) and Marc, and made tremendous sacrifices while working as a telephone operator at Disney A.B.C. to support their educational pursuits. She raised her children with an endless amount of love and home cooking and instilled in them strong core values of kindness, care and service that continue to guide them.
Everyone always knew where to go to feel loved. If you were feeling down Jackie knew just what to say. If you were happy, she would play songs from her extensive record collection. Either way a visit with Jackie would make you feel better because you were going to get a home cooked meal, words of affirmation and many hugs and kisses.
Jackie is predeceased by her parents, and brother, Clifton (Junie) Pettie, III. Memories of Jackie's warm and loving nature will be kept alive by her special friend Stan; her children Daree and Marc and his fiancée Kristen; their siblings Antoine and Derek; her ex-husband Selwyn Lucas; her grandchildren: Marquee, Amanda, Ryan and Reagan; her brother Stephen (Stevie); sisters-in-law Greta and Thelma, eight nieces and nephews and a host of loving relatives and friends.
How do we celebrate in these words a person who was so full of feeling? We commit to live each day as a tribute to Jackie: with warmth, love, concern for all, and kindness. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Funeral services will be held at Thornton's Funeral Home in Indian Head, Maryland on Monday, May 11, 2020 at 11:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is collecting donations to benefit underrepresented students attending Weill Cornell Medical College. Doctors Choi, Safdieh and Seigler on faculty at Weill Cornell treated Jackie with care, concern, compassion, respect and dignity.
