Obituary

HORACE JAMES YATES (AGE 86) OF POMFRET, MARYLAND

Horace James Yates was born in Faulkner, Maryland, on April 28, 1934, and peacefully transitioned into rest for eternal life on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at the Genesis Waugh Chapel Center in Gambrills, Maryland.  Horace was the fifth born child of the late Andrew and Pauline (Bond) Yates.

Horace received his education in the Charles County public school system and shortly thereafter joined the workforce as a construction laborer.  He was a member of the Laborers' International Union of North America, Local Union 11, for 50 years.

On April 16, 1971, Horace was united in Holy Matrimony to his only one love Doris Hicks Yates.  They celebrated their lives and shared their joys of love for 30 memorable, peaceful, happy, and fun years.  They enjoyed each other's company by establishing a weekly ritual of a Saturday dinner date where they took rides to various eateries in Charles County.  They were blessed with their greatest gift and joy -- their daughter Joyce Sandra Yates who completed their family circle.  Horace was very dedicated to his wife and daughter.  Although they were only a family of three, they shared a great life together.  After the passing of his wife Doris, Horace and his daughter Joyce continued to share that family love and bond with each other in their Pomfret home.

Horace was a man of few words, a very private person, and not much of a "socialite."  He was also a no-nonsense man with a calm and laid-back personality.  More often than not, though, a smile transformed his stern face.  He was definitely a Charles County man at heart and didn't venture out much but was truly proud of his roots.  He took pride in his home place while enjoying gardening and maintaining his yard.  He gave excellent care and great attention to his toys – his trucks and cars. He enjoyed sitting on his car porch in his favorite chair with his legs crossed waving to neighbors as they passed by or even enjoying neighborly conversations.  After retirement, Horace treasured his daily visits with Gil Bivins at Gilroy's Towing in White Plains while conversing with his cleverly witty sense of humor.  He was affectionately referred to as "Uncle Horace" by his many nieces and nephews.  Horace cherished the many Sunday visits from his nephew Michael, and often reminded his niece Monica about baking his favorite birthday cake.  Although quiet and low-keyed, Horace lived a good, full life.

In addition of his parents, Horace was preceded in death by his wife Doris; his daughter Joyce; his two brothers, Thomas Clinton (Elaine) and Joseph Bernard (Agnes); and his three sisters, Odell Brooks (James), Julia Yates, and Grace Jackson (Leroy).  His passing is the end of the Andrew and Pauline Yates children, but the Yates legacy lives on.  Horace has reunited with them all in God's Heavenly kingdom.  He is survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.
