Obituary

Honeycutt Williams of La Plata, formerly of Raleigh, NC, died peacefully August 20, 2012 at the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, La Plata, Maryland. His niece Mildred Dunston Wilson (Sanford) of La Plata had been his caregivers.

Known as "Cutt", he was born October 17, 1917, the youngest of six children to the late William and the late Edith Bell Williams in Dunn, NC.

He attended the Public Schools of Dunn, thereafter remaining in the area until he entered the military in 1942. Honeycutt served his Country for four years in the United States Army during World War II, in the Transportation Corps. He was assigned to a unit responsible for moving troops and equipment ashore during the major invasions in successful U.S. efforts to eliminate Japanese control of the Pacific. Honeycutt's unit provided the major support effort in the Inchon invasion and relief of U.S. forces under duress throughout the Islands in the Pacific. He demonstrated great expertise in the transition from a driver in Alabama to an expert Landing Ship TranSport (LST) operator in the Pacific Theater. Following an honorary discharge from the military, he relocated to New York, NY, where he joined four of his siblings. Through them, he met the lovely Elver Dunston (also of Raleigh) and they were united in marriage. They were married for 68 years. Honeycutt and Elver made their home in New York and later moved to Montclair, NJ.

Honeycutt's career spanned employment with the family's Tailor and Dry Cleaning Business, Taxi Cab Service and lengthy employment with the Caldwell, New Jersey Public Schools. He was the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions while working for the Board of Education. Eventually, Honeycutt and his wife returned to their retirement home in Raleigh and established membership in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, outside Raleigh in Wake Forest, NC.

Honeycutt was a kind, compassionate person with a winning smile. He enjoyed conversation, travel and fishing with his wife.

In addition to his parents, Honeycutt was preceded in death by his siblings, Mamie, James, Lena Mae, Henry and Pearlie.

He is survived by his wife, Elver Dunston Williams and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A private memorial service was held in La Plata on August 25, 2012. Burial will take place at the Carolina Biblical Gardens, Garner, NC.

Arrangements were handled by Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., Pomonkey, MD.
