IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen "Romaine"
Marbury
December 18, 1934 – March 8, 2024
Helen "Romaine" Marbury, 89, of Indian Head, Maryland.
Helen Romaine Marbury of Indian Head Maryland departed this life on Friday, March 8, 2024 at home. She was born on December 18, 1934, to the late Lorenzo and Helen Marbury. The third of eight siblings and the oldest girl, Romaine grew up in Fenwick and moved to Indian Head in January 1954.
She attended and graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1953. While there, she was a member of the 4H Club, excelled in volleyball and was known for her accurate half-court shot on the basketball team.
When Pomonkey High School held graduation, the class party was in the basement of her family home. A tradition that continued for years – or at least until someone parked on the front yard and Dad said no more.
Romaine was Lead Secretary to the Principal at JC Parks Elementary School, in Charles County, Maryland from 1959-1996. While there, she was recognized many times for outstanding and exemplary service to the school and the County. With her warm, welcoming, and kindhearted nature, Romaine raised many children and was mother to many including her brother Bobby, who she said always followed her around; to her nieces, nephews, and students at the school that often would come to visit and check in on her long after they graduated.
Romaine retired from Charles County Department of Education, J.C. Parks in 1996 and immediately began enjoying a life of leisure, with an all-expense paid, week stay in Jamaica. She would accompany her daughter on sales trips and trade shows throughout Southern Virginia, and North Carolina. Romaine befriended everyone she met. She also enjoyed spending time with her son sitting at Gravely Point watching the planes come and go.
She appreciated tasty food and was always up for a visit to Hibachi at Benihana's, Mike American Grill, Fogo de Chao, Popes Creek, and Mastros Steak House. Even as her health deteriorated, and she was limited to ice cubes she would request "the real deal" ice cream. Romaine had a sense of humor and loved to laugh, was quick-witted and always had a story ready for any occasion.
Romaine loved her children and was their biggest cheerleader. She was incredibly supportive and encouraging – believing nothing beats a failure but a try. Her favorite activities included music (especially Motown and the Temptations), dancing and sports teams (the Senators, Redskins and Orioles).
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Thomas L. Marbury (Tat), and Calvin "Bubba" Marbury.
Left to cherish her memory are daughter Wanda LaJeune Marbury, son Timothy Darnell Marbury, adopted daughter Melissa Dix; five siblings, Patricia Harrison, Robert, Garrett (Helen), Sharon, Shelly (Tyrone), Aunt Evelyn Lowe, Rheeta Norman, and honorary family member, Dr. James Chesley, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews; and special friends Elaine Baker, Millie Hungerford and Thomas Martin.
