Obituary

On Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Maryland, Helen Elizabeth Law passed from this Life to be with her Lord.

Helen was born on August 27, 1931 to the late Douglas and Inez Pelham, in Arlington, Virginia where she attended Arlington County Public Schools. She became a member of the Way of the Cross Church and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and thereafter was baptized.

She met and married the love of her life, the late Leo J. Law and later moved to Washington, DC. From their union they were blessed with 10 children; Gloria Turner, Clarice Henderson, Inez Downs, Tony Law, Ruth Williams, Eugene Law, (Larry Law who preceded her in death)
Nancy Taylor, Phillip Law and Darrell Law.

As a wife and housewife she devoted her time to raising her children through her strength and fear of the Lord. Helen was a devoted and loving grandmother, who lived long enough to see her great great grandchildren. God blessed Helen with 22 grandchildren, 31 great grand children and 6 great great grandchildren. Helen was the matriarch of the family who was highly respected by all. She was very active in her children and grandchildren's lives. She volunteered her time at their schools, not only caring for her own children, but the neighborhood children as well. She was very proud of her children and was always eager to pull out a picture or two of her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing after school games with her grandchildren, and surely she was out to "Win" them all. Raising 5 sons who were avid sports fans, she loved sports and was a true "Dallas Cowboys" fan.

Helen was also well known in her community. She was a woman of wisdom who knew how to pray and loved praising the Lord. Helen also knew how to encourage others in such a way that after she gave her "speech" you would surely walk away forgetting whatever was troubling you. She was just that kind of person. She was full of humor, fun loving, and kept you laughing and in tears. She was a great cook and loved to spend the Holidays with her family.

Helen joined Church of the Great Commission (formerly Parkway Baptist Church) in 1987. She served on several ministries including the Usher Board, Senior Choir, and the Hospitality Ministry. She loved helping, preparing and serving food for the Homeless and witnessing to those less fortunate was her passion. When she was at Parkway Baptist Church she joined the Bowling Team where she won many trophies. One of the most enjoyable moments in her life was the journey to Israel and Jerusalem. That was an experience she treasured in her heart.

Helen leaves to cherish her memory, 9 children; Gloria Turner, Clarice Henderson,
Inez Downs (Curtis), Tony Law (Tilwanda), Ruth Williams, Eugene Law (Sandy),
Nancy Taylor (Charles), Phillip Law and Darrell Law and her siblings, Rose Strothers, Eleanor Lewis, Mary Snead, Dorothy Harrod, James Pelham (Lucy), John Pelham (Joyce), Betty Jean Murray, Marie Ledbetter, and Lawrence Pelham (who preceded her in death). She also leaves to cherish in her memory, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Her Viewing was held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 from 9:00am until the Home Going Service, 11:00am at Church of the Great Commission, 5055 Allentown Road, Camp Springs, Maryland. Interment, Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Suitland, Maryland. Arrangements, entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland.
