Mother Hazel V. Gutrick
On Thursday, April 9, 2015, Hazel V. Coates Gutrick was received by her Heavenly Father at the University of Maryland, Charles Regional Medical Center in LaPlata, Maryland.
Hazel was born on March 4, 1908 in Charles County, Maryland to the late Mariah and Noble Coates.
She was known to most as "Mama" or "Mother" not only to her children and grandchildren but to all who came to know and love her. Mother Gutrick had a quiet demeanor and a cheerful presence that was endearing and appreciated by all.
In her youth, she met and married the love of her life, Ben Gutrick. They were blessed with twelve children.
Mother Gutrick accepted the Lord as her personal Saviour at a very early age. She was baptized in the river at Maryland Point. In earlier years, she was a longtime member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. After relocating to Doncaster, she joined the Mount Hope Baptist Church. Mother Gutrick was always a willing and cheerful participant when called to serve for the Lord. She served on the Usher Ministry, Deaconess Ministry, Missionary Ministry, Helping Hand Ministry, the Pastor's Aid Club and the Who So Every Will Ministry. She was honored to serve as "Mother of the Church". Mother Gutrick will be truly missed by her church family.
Her early life was not an easy one. Sadly, her parents passed away while she was a very young girl. As a child, she worked as a servant. She never showed any bitterness while serving as a servant. She later worked at the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland. She also worked at the Wilson Apartments in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
She loved to travel. She and her beloved sister, Bertha Carter would often fly to California. She truly cherished her time spent with her sister. She also enjoyed ceramics and crocheting.
In addition to her parents, Mother Gutrick was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years; three daughters, Neomia, Marguerite and Nellie; two sons, Russell and Robert; a sister, Annie Gainer; and a brother, Noble Coates.
She leaves behind to cherish many memories of a life well-lived; seven daughters, Alberta Branson, Annie Warren (Nathaniel), Pearl Smith, Shirley Lewis, Betty Ross, Geraldine Ward and Vyria M. Cobey (James); and a devoted sister, Bertha Carter. Mother Gutrick was blessed with 27 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren, 115 great-great grandchildren and 12 great-great-great grandchildren. God gave her the gift of longevity to allow her to see five generations.
Mother Gutrick was genuinely compassionate, always calm and quiet. She will be missed by her sister, daughters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 8705 Gilroy Road, Nanjemoy, Maryland on Saturday, April 18, 2015 from 9–11 am. Funeral services will follow at 11 am. Interment will be at the Church Cemetery.
