Obituary

Harriet Langley, 91, of Waldorf, Maryland

Harriet Langley was born to the late Harriet Holton and James Combs in Harlem, New York on December 11, 1931, along with "Twinsie Winsie" Beatrice. She went to sleep on Friday, March 17, 2023, at Genesis Healthcare in Waldorf, Maryland.

The young Miss Combs was educated in the New York Public School System, graduating from Commerce High School in Manhattan, New York in 1949. She married the love of her life, George LeeRoy Matthew in a lavish ceremony on November 9, 1952. To this union were born two daughters, Veronica, and Bernadette (who predeceased her).

Harriet worked 25 years with the New York Department of Social Services until she moved to Bermuda, along with her young grandchildren, to join her husband. Over the years she has served as a foster parent, nursing assistant, and New York taxi driver, along with fulfilling her calling as a servant to others, which sometimes included caring for the needs of the homeless.

She loved to travel, drive her car, keep on the move, and was even referred to affectionately as "Zoom" by one friend. You never knew where her next adventure would take her. When asked who would be traveling with her, she always answered "Jesus" and they covered many miles together. It was nothing for her to be in Maryland one day and the next day find out that she had driven out of town to wherever she was called on to help someone in need.

Harriet was one of a kind who lived life on her own terms. One of her proudest accomplishments was helping a friend transport vehicles from Maryland to California with Harriet driving one by herself at 85 years old!

Harriet had been a devout Catholic for forty years until she heard the preaching of Pastor Charles D. Brooks and accepted the Sabbath message. She became a member of the Hunts Point Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Bronx, New York, and worked with Patrecia Langley as a Bible Worker. She later joined with the Pisgah Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the early 90s when she relocated from New York to Southern Maryland. During her tenure at Pisgah, she served as Deaconess; Community Services Leader; and 50+ Leader, where she organized a bus trip to Berrien Springs, Michigan on a Seventh-Day Adventist History Tour; and Pathfinder Counselor, where she proudly marched in full uniform in the Pathfinder parade at the age of 82!

Harriet's life was marked by prayer, humor, service, strong faith, that New York wit and quick quips. To expressed thanks for an act of kindness she would shoot back: "no more than I should do." When asked who was going to help her do one impossible thing after another the answer was always "Jesus." She always had a testimony and would quickly say, "I prayed about it" when questioned about some of her more interesting decisions. Harriet looked at life through the lens of faith and thought nothing impossible with God as her guide.

Harriet was an amazing woman of God with many gifts and talents, which she humbly used for His glory alone! One that blessed many people the most was the gift of "Hospitality." She had a way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and special, finding something good and positive to say even in the most difficult situations. She was happiest when she could lighten the burden of others even if it meant inconveniencing herself and putting her own needs aside. She became a compassionate caregiver for several individuals who grew to love her for the selfless care she gave.
Harriet was affectionately called Momma, Nana, Twinsie-Winsie, Cousin Harriet, Lady Langley, Zoom, Lula-Belle Jones, Sweetie Pie, and Sister Langley. No matter what you called her you learned to love her for who she was. She was full of life and kept you either laughing or concerned. She was an original and will be truly missed.

Harriet Langley leaves the legacy of an extensive family, friends, and church family: daughter Veronica Trott-Jones (Donald); grandchildren: Rokeem (Maygon), Demetrius (Tyzalia), Donette (Tyshawn), Omardelle (Chocolait); sisters: twin Beatrice, Albertina, and Dorothy (predeceased); brothers: James, Alvin Matthew (all predeceased), great-grandchildren: Justin, Tarianna, Brianna, Tyshawn Jr., Omardelle, Jr., Rabecca, Arriana, Tavion, Illianna, Omarion, and Elizabeth and innumerable relatives here in Southern Maryland and across the country.
