LEWIS, HAROLD VERNON SR.
On Saturday, July 28, 2012, God sent angels to escort our loved one, Harold Vernon Lewis, Sr. home to be with the Lord. Harold was born March 22, 1934 in Prince Georges County, Maryland to the late James and the late Dorothy Lewis. He was a member of Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church until his death.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son Rodney Lewis, brothers, James and John Lewis and sister, Blanche Campbell.
He attended Pomonkey Elementary School and St. Vincent DePaul Catholic School in the District of Columbia. He started off in construction and then went on to work for the Naval Ordnance Station in Indian Head, Maryland, The National Park Service in Washington, DC and retired from the Prince Georges County Public School System. Harold was a "die hard" Redskins fan who enjoyed watching his team on Sundays with family and friends. He was a "jack of all trades" who could do anything from mechanical work to plumbing. Also during his downtime he enjoyed fishing and hunting. One of his favorite sayings was, " I'm not James Brown but you can try me." During his final years of life, he resided at the Charles County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he made many more friends and was loved by the facility and staff.
Harold leaves to cherish and celebrate his memories his wife, Shirley Lewis and their children Janice Montgomery (Bertram), Harold Lewis, Jr. (Ellrethe), and Mark Lewis; grandchildren Jeronda, Tameka and Shadonn; great grand children, Keith, Darius, Daimon and Marcus. Siblings, Mary Ann (Conrad) Young, Estelle (Colbert) Holmes, VanDyke Lewis, Joseph Lewis, godchildren; Cynthia Cobey, Rachelle Lewis, Wanda Holmes, Gene Jackson and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Viewing, 9am until time of Service, 11am on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 8705 Gilroy Road, Nanjemoy, Maryland. Interment, Church Cemetery. Arrangements, Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., Indian Head, Maryland.
