Harold Eugene Bland peacefully transitioned on January 6, 2026. Known affectionately as Piggy, Harold lived a life defined by kindness, joy, and an unshakeable bond with his family. His presence carried warmth, his laughter created connection and his memory remains deeply woven into the hearts of those who love him.

Early Life and Faith

Harold Eugene Bland was born on August 17, 1947, in Washington D.C. at Freedmen’s Hospital, now known as Howard University Hospital. He was the second child born to the late Arthur R. Bland, Sr., and Ruth E. Bland (née Washington). He was reared and educated in Charles County, where he attended Charles County Public Schools and formed lifelong connections within his community.

From an early age, Harold’s life was grounded firmly in faith. He attended his family’s home church, Macedonia Baptist Church, where his spiritual journey was nurtured within a loving church community. He sang in the choir under the direction of his cousin, the late Daisy Johnson (née Dyson), sharing his love of music in worship.

As a young adult, Harold accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Macedonia Baptist Church and was baptized by Pastor William H. Scott on February 15, 1976, at Greenway Beach (Marshall Hall). His faith remained a steady and comforting presence throughout his life.

Life Rooted in Love and Joy

Harold was known for his kind heart, gentle nature, and warm spirit. As his father matured in life, and especially following his father’s transition, Harold was lovingly cared for by his family. He was surrounded by unwavering devotion and support, a testament to the deep bonds he shared with those closes to him.

He found great joy in dancing and had a lifelong passion for music, with a special love for oldies but goodies and the legendary sounds of Motown. Music brought him happiness, comfort and expression, and it remained a constant source of delight throughout his life.

Family Traditions and Treasured Moments

Family time was one of Harold’s greatest joys. He cherished warm family gatherings, treasured moments watching Sanford and Son with his father, and engaged in spirited games of bid whist, he embraced every moment. Harold also became known for his infamous “No” bids, which was a bold and confident play that would routinely have opponents rising from the table in disbelief and laughter.

Loved Ones and Legacy

Harold was preceded in death by his beloved parents, and siblings Avon L. Bland and Iris O. Bland and Elmer (Joe) Jackson and Charleen Kearney (née Swann) who were like a brother and sister.

He leaves to honor and cherish his memory his bonus mother Rena J. Bland (née Winters), his brothers, Arthur R. Bland, Jr. (Rosie), Pierre D. Bland, Sr. (Pat), Padra A. Bland (Kathleen), Randal A. Bland, Sr. (Kimberly); and his sisters, Charlain L. Bland (John), Desiree L. Bolden and LaVerne Washington. A sister-in-love Cynthia Bland (née Wilson), the surviving wife of his brother Avon. Aunts Alice Eudora Chisley (née Bland) and Elenora Bland (née Butler) and a wide circle of cousins.

He is also remembered fondly by a host of nephews and nieces: Danell Bland, Brenard Bland (Jewell), Duran Winters, Dujunnea Bland (Stephanie), Jaasiel Bland (Rebecca), Ralph Parker IV (Ameera), Pierre D. Bland, Jr. (Aryon), Randal Avery Bland, Jr., Brian Bland, Randolph James Bland, Rita Mack, Erica Kennedy (Rob), Leah Bland and Christine Scott. Additionally, Harold leaves behind a flourishing legacy of great and great-great nephews and nieces, the ever-growing branches of his family tree that brought him immense pride and joy.

Harold Eugene Bland’s life reflects faith, love, and family unity. His memory will forever live on through cherished stories, shared laughter, and the enduring bonds of family that carry his spirit forward.

Friends may visit with the family Friday, January 23rd from 10 am until time of funeral service at 11 am in The Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, 3439 Livingston Road Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment immediately to follow at Resurrection Cemetery Clinton, MD.
