IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gwendolyn Mae
Covington
July 1, 1935 – June 18, 2018
Gwendolyn Mae Covington, aka Mama Gwendolyn of Fort Washington, Maryland, quietly and peacefully departed this life at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.
Gwendolyn was born in Washington, D.C. on July 1, 1935 and was the tenth child of the late William and Catherine Colbert.
Gwendolyn was educated in the Prince George County Public School System. After graduating high school, she was employed by Andrew's Air Force Base, Old Soldiers Home. She was also employed by the District of Columbia Public School System as a Teachers Aide for many years until she retired.
Mama Gwendolyn, to the many in "Colbertsville," was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother of six children. Mama Gwendolyn was a caring and loving person who couldn't say no to anyone in need. Her memory will always be cherished by those she touched with her kindness, giving heart and her passion for life and love of family and friends.
She was a strong woman in many ways. She also thought she was the best driver on the highway, no matter how many things she hit; curbs, poles, other cars, metro bus mirrors but never people, thank God! After riding with her, holding on to everything in the car and hitting brakes that weren't there, which was too much, she would always say "I'm Driving!" Then she would say, "Why are these fools blowing at me and we would reply, you can only be in one lane!" Even though she sideswiped every pole in the parking lot of MGM, she still thought she was the best driver. If you said anything about her driving all she would say was "So!"
She was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and William Colbert, husband, Luther Earl Covington; son, Rodney Gilbert; daughter, Jacqueline Colbert, grandson, Jermaine Savoy; sisters, Novella, Shelia, Isabella, Leola and Christine; and brothers, Rudolph, Earl and William Colbert.
Left to cherish memories are two daughters, Barbara Gilbert Hall and Yolanda Covington; two sons, John W. Gilbert (Dora) and Orlanda Covington; two granddaughters, Keisha N. Gilbert and Tina Gilbert; four grandsons, Johnathan R. Savoy, Orlando L. and Zyier Covington and Sherman Gilbert; two great granddaughters, Kierra Savoy and Olivia Gilbert; five great grandsons, Isaiah and Joshua Gilbert, Jermaine, Tremaine and Kyree Savoy and a host of other relatives and friends.
A special thanks to William "Coochie" and Penny Colbert who were always there and never said no to anything pertaining to Mama Gwendolyn. Also, a special thanks to Clara Colbert, Doris Dyson and Deborah Ford. Additionally, Mama Gwendolyn's love will forever be present with cousins and buddies: Katherine Brown, Barbara Jean, Eliza Warrick, Shirley Duckett, Alberta and Eloise (she could never get her off the phone with these ladies).
