Obituary

On Sunday, May 15, 2011, Griffin Dixon departed this life at home in Brandywine, MD.

Griffin Joseph Dixon was born on March 22, 1917 to the late Joseph and Finette Dixon. He was affectionately called "Beansie" which originated from his mother when he was a child. Griffin grew up in Snow Hill, North Carolina and was the seventh of 16 children. As a child he attended Greene County public schools and worshipped at Shady Grove FWB Church.

Griffin spent his early years working on the farm until the age of 25, when he enlisted in the US Army in 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Griffin married Anna Shepard and to this union one son was born. Later, Griffin relocated to Washington, DC. He worked various jobs before becoming a government employee for the General Services Administration (GSA) as a Security Officer. He worked at GSA until his retirement after 26 years of service. He relocated to Halifax, North Carolina where he resided until his health declined. Griffin relocated to Brandywine, Maryland until his death.

He loved music. Griffin played the piano, accordion, harmonica and loved to sing. His last visit to Halifax, NC was December 2010 when he returned to perform in the annual Christmas program.
He loved to demonstrate how strong and flexible he was for his age. He would challenge you to an arm wrestling match and he also liked to show you how high he could still kick. He always liked to tease others that he was getting married.

Griffin was preceded in death by his siblings: Truman, Roscoe, Beulah Mae, Vera Lee, Jesse, Pearlie, Earl Levi, and Daisy Lee. He leaves to cherish his memory, son Willie Earl (Marilyn); brothers:
Rodgers (Ada), Willie (Joyce), sister Flossie Pridgen all of North Carolina; brothers Robert, James (Percy), sister Clarretta Gibson of Maryland; and brother Henry (Rebecca) of Pennsylvania; dear friend Marjorie; goddaughter Moliki; and, many nieces and nephews.

His viewing will be held on Tuesday, May 24, 10am until time of service 11am at From the Heart Ministries located at 4949 Allentown Road, Suitland MD 20746. The interment will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 10am in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD. Arrangements entrusted to Thornton Funeral Home, P.A.
