Obituary

Wallace, Greta Dean (Swanigan) (Age 75) of Fort Washington, Maryland.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF
GRETA DEAN SWANIGAN WALLACE
DEVOTED WIFE, SISTER, AUNT, NIECE, SISTER-IN-LAW, COUSIN, FRIEND AND ABOVE ALL - A LOYAL SERVANT TO GOD!

Our loving sister Greta Dean Swanigan Wallace was born to the proud parents of the late Joe Austin Swanigan Sr. and the late Ruthie Mae Moon Swanigan on March 8, 1939 in Guin, Alabama.

Greta was baptized at a very early age at Real Chapel CME Church in Guin, Alabama. Greta graduated high school from "Guin Colored School" in the spring of 1958. During her school years, she was a star basketball player on the girl's team.

Soon afterwards, Greta married the love of her life, SFC Fred Wallace. She pledged her love and support to him on December 29, 1960 for 43 years until Fred's home going on April 14, 2004.

Many people often asked Greta why she never had children, her response was always, "I've already raised my children, four younger brothers and sisters, the last of which was born when I turned 20!"And to all of the four younger brothers and sisters she will always be like a second mother.

Though Greta never worked outside the home, she would tell anyone that she loved being a homemaker and taking care of her husband. For as long as Greta and Fred were together, she always prepared three square meals every day. Greta loved to cook and bake. She would cook turnip or collard greens for every meal if someone was there to eat them. Don't forget the glazed apple cake and the lemon pound cake, each piece always individually wrapped. People constantly asked her for the recipes.

Greta's church was her glory, Grace United Methodist Church was what she called the salvation she had been searching for all her life and her actions within the church lived up to every expectation. Greta was a member of the Chancellor and sounds of glory Choirs. Though she was quiet and would have to be forced to sing lead, Greta had "perfect pitch" and throughout the day she could be heard singing while doing her daily deeds. Greta was also a member of the Hospitality Committee and even in poor health she was always there doing what she could!

One of the most amazing things that only God can understand is- No matter how good or how bad Greta felt, if you asked her how she is doing, her reply was always, with a smile, "I'm Fine!"

On February 13 2015 Greta peacefully departed this earthly life. She was preceded by her parents and husband. Left to cherish the love and memories that Greta Swanigan Wallace has left behind are three sisters, Brenda Jackson, Rita Hollis and Emma Allen; five brothers, Charles, Joe Austin Jr., Michael, Kenneth and Maurice Swanigan; six sisters-in-law, Lucy Sublett, Jewel Montgomery, Debra and Elizabeth Swanigan, Carole and Dorothy Wallace and one brother–in-law, Thomas Sublett; six god children: Lawanda Gray, Evette Gore, Brittany Metcalf, Lea Toya Price, Donny Wallace, Teisha Wallace and dear friends, Rosella Martin, Gabrielle Peace, Shirley and James Frink and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
