GERVELD SMALLWOOD, AGE 35, OF NANJEMOY, MARYLAND

Gerveld Delante Smallwood was born to Monica Datcher and James Ricky Smallwood on August 31, 1986.  Early on the morning of October 22, 2021, at Washington Hospital Center following a lengthy illness, Gerveld surrendered his sweet soul to the Holy spirit and was received into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Gerveld willingly accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while in the hospital.

Gerveld was educated in the Charles County Public School system and graduated from Lackey High School in 2006.  He played football with the Lackey Chargers and went on to play with the Charles County Lion Semi Pro.    As a young boy, he played T-Ball with the local Nanjemoy Team. Gerveld attended America Construction Training School for Heavy Equipment Operations, Specialty:  Bulldozer in Dothan, Alabama and received a Certificate of Completion in March 2008.  He also attended the College of Southern Maryland where he earned a Certificate of Completion for Getting to Know Your Water System.  Gerveld worked many jobs, namely the Accokeek Foundation, Waste Water Treatment Plant, Environmental Service, Pessoa Construction Company, and Dulles International Airport.  His talents were in the Heavy Equipment field.  Gerveld retired from the Charles County Government due to health challenges.  Gerveld received many recognitions and awards while working with the County Government.

Gerveld loved cars, fishing, spending time with his one and only daughter Malia, going out to eat and hanging out with family and friends.  Michael and Florencia Norwood, Sr., were like his second parents.  Growing up he enjoyed being with his uncle Curtis and Aunt Ellen and their girls.  He often talked about going fishing with his grandfather back in the day.  Gerveld loved teasing his sister, Khiera, and rubbing his moms arms.  He always smiled when his love Dee called him Poo.

Gerveld was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Lymberg Smallwood; Michael Norwood, Jr., who was like a brother to him; godsister, Crystal Jackson; cousin, James Buster Warren; aunts, Yvonne Smallwood, Barbara Ann Wood, Betty Smallwood, Ida Warren and Jean Jackson; uncles, Robert Hill, James Smallwood, Jr., and Robert A. Jackson,  In addition to his parents, Gerveld leaves to cherish lasting memories, his maternal grandparents, Gerald and Mildred Datcher; paternal grandmother, Mary Louise Wills; his daughter, the beautiful Malia Folkes; the love of his life, DeAnndra Folkes; sister, Khiera Datcher; aunts, Florencia Norwood (Michael, Sr.), Patsy Ann Boyden (Mark), Polly Smallwood and Betty J. Wills; uncles, Curtis Jackson (Ellen) - also godparents, Thomas Smallwood (Brenda), John Smallwood, Roger Smallwood (Fontella), and Michael Smallwood; great aunts, Joan Bransome, Yvette Jones, Marie Young, Geraldine Swann, Isadore Datcher, Bertha Datcher, Adelaide Datcher and Cythia Jones; great uncles, James Ward (Develia) Winston Datcher (Arnetta), James E. Thomas (Rev. Ruby); godmother, Patricia Hills; godsisters, Patrice Jackson and Lakisha Andrews; godchildren, Zamari, Alaysia and Adrian Norwood.  Gerveld will be "Forever in Our Hearts".

Friends may visit with the family Saturday, October 30th from 9 am until time of service 11 am at Thornton Funeral Home Chapel, 3439 Livingston Road Indian Head, MD. Interment to follow at Mt. Hope Church Cemetery, Nanjemoy, MD.
