Gertrude LaMay Hatton (Age 76) of Washington, DC.
Gertrude LaMay Hatton was born on August 19, 1943, in Maryland Point, Maryland, to James Oliver Tibbs and Nellie E. Washington. She was the 12 th born of 13 children and was affectionately known as "Diddie" by her family and friends.
Diddie lost her mother at the young age of twelve, and she was raised by her father in Nanjemoy, Maryland. She graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1961. Diddie married James Hatton, Sr., on September 21, 1968, and they had three children, Shelia, Quincy, and James.
At 27 years of age, Diddie moved to Washington, DC, to be closer to her older sister. She began her career in office administration in the retail industry until her retirement in 1989. As a young woman, Diddie enjoyed playing softball, Bid Whist and Tunk, and bowling. She also enjoyed cooking comfort food for her family.
After retirement, Diddie moved to Northeast, Washington, DC, where she joined Capitol Hill Church of God and Prophecy; she was a Deaconess. Diddie maintained her love of cooking for her family, spending time with her family, and studying Scriptures. She was also a passionate collector of Bibles.
Diddie passed away peacefully on June 1, 2020. She is preceded in death by her son Quincy; her sisters Louise, Rachel, Sarah, and Mary; and her brothers Warren, Edward, and George. Left to cherish her memory are her brothers, Frank (Trina), Harry (Blondie), and Gilbert; sister Catherine; daughter, Shelia (Rodney); sons, James (Michelle) and Willie; 12 grandchildren, Sierra (Craig), Jamilya, Jasmine, Rayonna, Malik, Willow, Devmin, Jales, Isaiah, Laniah, and Kaymani; and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
On Monday, June 1, 2020 at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, Gertrude Hatton peacefully transitioned to eternal life.
Her Viewing will be, 10:00 am, until time of Service, 11:00 am, Thursday, June 11, 2020 in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.
Private Interment, Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
