IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Sylvester
Williams
March 6, 1924 – August 7, 2017
On Monday, August 7, 2017, at the age of 93, George Sylvester Williams Sr., affectionately known to his family as "Sonny," went to be with his Lord, wife, Margaret and daughter, Margaret "Fluggie" Thomas. Surrounded by his loving family, he leaves to mourn his departure children Patricia "Patsy", George Jr. "Topper" (Gladys), Agnes (James), James "Michael" and his youngest brother Virgil "Peter" Williams (Sharon).
Through the years George was blessed with grandchildren; Neco Thomas, Markita Chavez (Ronald II), Demetria Neal "Dee Dee" (James), Delancia Mason, Victoria Williams and Sylvia Williams, great grandsons; De'Angelio, De'Georgio, Justyce, Ronald III, Khaleel, and Kharon. Although they were his grandchildren, George counted each one as his own. Having no less love for any of them, Neco would become his shadow. Where George went Neco often followed. He would often share with his grandchildren how he and his wife worked hard to provide for them so they would want for nothing but stressed the importance that they too should work hard and maintain a job!
Born to Julia Dunmore and Sylvester Williams on March 6, 1924 in Brentland, MD, he was one of eleven siblings. As one of the oldest children, he learned the meaning of hard work and keeping family first at an early age. Sonny's father Sylvester had the most influence in his life.
He worked for Burkett and Burkett Builders and WSSC for 20 years.
George was joined in matrimony to Margaret "Biggie" Simms on May 16, 1950 enjoying 44 years together until her death in 1994. When her health began to decline, he was devoted to her care and wouldn't leave her until someone returned home to tend to her needs. George was very proud to be able to build his own home in Port Tobacco, MD where he lived until his passing. As important of an accomplishment as building his home was, equally important to George was his beloved 1969 John Deere tractor. He could be seen driving that tractor up and down the hill of Port Tobacco Road, that is, unless he was walking. George was a strong and able bodied man even in his elderly years. He insisted on walking from his home to the store, often declining rides from family and friends as he headed for the top of the hill.
Among other things, George was a tobacco farmer. It was hard work, but it was work that he embraced. He even taught some of his cousins how to grow tobacco and maintain a garden. Until his health began to fail, George always maintained a summer garden sharing a bounty of delicious tomatoes and green beans.
He enjoyed hunting with family and friends, farming, and attending various family functions where you would catch him hand dancing. He had a hearty laugh and an enjoyment of life that won't be forgotten.
Sonny will be remembered by special memories shared with his in- laws: Inez, Ruth, Dorothy, Ethel Mae, Thomas, and Sydney including a host of nieces, nephews. special cousin Bernard Jamieson and a host of other cousins and friends.
