Obituary

George Stokes, affectionately known as "Bubba," was born October 24, 1933, to the late George Stokes and Katie L. Singleton in the town of Tallahassee, Florida. The family relocated to DeLand, Florida where George would later attend Euclid High School in Volusia County. Drawn to a greater calling, George delayed his education to serve his country in the United States Air Force, where he later received his diploma.

In September of 1954, George met Ruby Gentry. Both with an abiding love for the other and a powerful sense of family, married August 6, 1955. From this union came two beautiful daughters, Loretta Jean and Beverly Ann.

After 23 years of service to the military, Sergeant George Stokes retired with full military honors. Though true retirement proved elusive for George, his drive and commitment to his family led him to a second career with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro). After 25 years of service to Metro, George, at long last retired.

George gave his life to the Lord and was baptized in the year 2010. He was a member of the St. James Missionary Baptist Church, under the tutelage of Rev. Larry D. Chavers, his pastor and brother-in-law.

Always in pursuit of happiness, his journey taught him to love life and to take advantage of all it had to offer. Between his work life and his family life, he found balance in his vintage model cars, watching college and NFL football, and in the simple pleasures of a home life filled with love and the laughter of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The small joys, such as mowing the lawn or taking a drive, brought him the greatest pleasure.

George was the measure of a man: an attentive father and respectable husband; a
conventional man with a spirit of sharing. His humble generosity was a visible blessing to many.
On September 28, 2011, George quietly and peacefully was called home to his Lord and Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Stokes and Katie L. Singleton; and loving wife, Ruby Stokes.

He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters: Loretta (Al) Black, Beverly S. Law, and Carolyn A. Henry; five sisters: Rosa Gibson, Dorothy Solomon, Jessie (Ernest) Harris, Marjorie Ross, and Althea (Larry) Chavers; two brothers: Sammie L. Singleton and Robert (Yvonne) Singleton; aunt, Henrietta May and uncle, James (Kaye) Fedd; seven grandchildren: Akyva, Avyka, Alonzo, Niesha, Louisa, Carolyn and YaYa; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and longtime loving friend, Sylvia Miller and her family.

His viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 11th, 10am until time of Service 11am in the Chapel of Thornton Funeral Home, P.A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, MD 20640. Interment Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, MD.
