Celebrating the Life of George Albert Dyson, Jr.

September 1, 1941 – April 29, 2020

"A Life Well Lived… No Regrets…"

GOD in his infinite wisdom and divine love, called from our midst the spirit of our loved one, George Albert Dyson, Jr.

George Albert Dyson, Jr ., affectionately known as "Al Jr.," "Babe Brother" and "Uncle June-June" was born on September 1, 1941 to the late George Albert Dyson, Sr. and Rosie Condelia (Smith) Dyson in Accokeek, Maryland.  He peacefully crossed over to God's Kingdom on April 29, 2020, at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, following a brief illness.  He was the youngest of three children.

Albert was educated in the Charles County Public School System and graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1960.  While attending high school, he was a member of the basketball team where he played point guard.

After graduating from high school, Albert began his Federal career in 1960 as an Explosives Operator with the Naval Ordnance Station (now known as Naval Surface Warfare Center) in Indian Head, MD.  He was later drafted into the Army as a Supply Clerk during the Vietnam War, Stationed in Europe, where he participated on his unit's basketball and boxing teams. He served his country faithfully from January 1964 until February 1966 when he was honorably discharged.  Upon his return to civilian life, Albert returned to work with the Naval Ordnance Station where he was considered an expert in production processing of explosives and propellants for programs such as the Tartar, Terrier, Talos, Sidewinder, MK 115 Warheads, LOVA, Rocket Catapults CKU-5BA and CKU-7A programs.  He received many performance awards, commendation letters, Special Act Awards throughout his career for his dedicated service and exhibiting a job well done.  After 35 years of service, Albert retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center in 1996.

One might say that Albert achieved much and even exceeded his career aspirations, but it was not until 1966 that he made the ultimate accomplishment that would change his life forever.  On October 15, 1966, he was united in holy matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Hancock and from this union, a son Barry and a daughter Brigitte, were born.  Albert was deeply committed to his family and his children were his pride and joy.  To his children, he was their hero.

Albert and Lorraine decided to raise their children in Washington, DC and later moved to Fort Washington, MD.  There, Albert was introduced and has maintained friendships with neighbors spanning over 40 years.  He is best known and remembered by his family and friends for the Dyson's Labor Day Weekend Barbeque, which was a celebration for his love of family, friends and his birthday.  Albert maintained a meticulously landscaped yard and also loved decorating his home for the Christmas season, which he faithfully accomplished every Christmas since 1979.  During the holiday season, neighbors, family and friends would drive through his neighborhood to take pictures of his well-decorated house.

While Albert's real abiding passion was his family and friends, he was an avid sports fan.  He was a member of various bowling leagues in Charles County; he enjoyed attending the Washington Redskins football games and the Wizards basketball games, but it was his love for baseball that gave him pure joy.  Albert played with the Accokeek Hawks, the Pomonkey Browns, and the Pomonkey Giants baseball teams at the positions of pitcher and second baseman.  He later became the manager of the Pomonkey Giants and coached the team to the 1981 Southern Maryland Industrial League Championship Victory, where the team finished the season with a record of 19-1.  He often attended the professional baseball games to cheer on the Washington Nationals.  This culminated into Albert attending the 2019 National League Championship game seven, to witness the Washington Nationals win and move on to the World Series.

Albert enjoyed playing cards, "talking trash", dancing, listening to "Oldies" music, watching Westerns, and Judge Judy on television.  He had a passion for antique cars, especially his 1968 Dodge Coronet 500 Convertible, which he affectionately referred to as "Betsy".  He believed that he was a master craftsman as he enjoyed building, tinkering and fixing things around his home.  He was always available to lend a hand, a ride, a story, a laugh or support.  Every person he encountered, enjoyed the stories, wisdom and thoughts he shared.  He never met a stranger.

In addition to his parents, Albert was preceded in death by his sister, Octavia King.  Albert was a beloved husband, devoted father, grandfather, a loving brother and caring uncle.  His life's legacy will continue to live in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.  He leaves to celebrate and cherish his memory his wife of 54 years, Lorraine Dyson; a son, Barry Dyson of Fort Washington, MD; two daughters Brigitte Dyson (Brian) of Waldorf, MD, Nanette Williams of Norfolk, VA; six grandchildren, Talaya, Bakari, Bilal Dyson, Barry Rogers, Judonne Baxter and Jasmine Williams; one great granddaughter, Kaia Lewis; one sister, Theresa Chase (Russell) of Indian Head, MD; brother-in law, Reginald Hancock of Fort Washington, MD; a very special cousin (brother), Joseph "Butch" Chase; four dedicated friends, Wayne Holt, Melvin Holly, Paul Butler, and Alfred Bishop; his German Shepard, Onyx and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

What an incredibly great man...  He will be remembered as a generous man who offered encouraging words and for the selfless love he showed to others.

The family asks that you honor Albert by cherishing every day as if it were your last, forgiving the unforgivable and remembering his service to others, his infectious laugh and brilliant smile.
