George Alexander Brown of La Plata, Maryland passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.George was born on April 3rd, 1942, in La Plata, Maryland, to George Edward and Blanche Fenwick Brown. He was the younger of two children. Known as Georgie to his family and friends, George excelled academically and athletically in the Charles County Public School system. He played varsity football, basketball, and baseball and was captain of all three teams during his senior year. Immediately after graduation from Bel Alton High School, George joined the United States Air Force (USAF). Shortly thereafter, Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates contacted his mother regarding the team's interest in recruiting him. George continued to play recreational baseball and football while off duty when he was in the USAF.
George was proud of his service to the country, and credited the USAF's core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do, with guiding many of his life's decisions.
George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. On December 14, 1969, George married Vivian Arlean Whalen. They had three children: Lisa Monique and twins Kelly Alexis and Brian Alexander. George was a proud grandfather of five grandchildren. George loved and cherished his family, who in return respected and deeply loved and adored him. He especially enjoyed planning unique, exciting, and adventurous vacations for his family. He often boasted that he had visited all but four states in America. He found immense pleasure in attending professional basketball, football, and baseball games, sharing stories about his life experiences, and watching sports on TV with his family. He also enjoyed an especially close bond with his wife's sisters and brothers, their spouses, and their children and never missed a gathering of his extended family.
George enjoyed spending time on the water, especially on his beloved boat which he named 'By George!'. His hobbies were fishing, gardening, and hunting.
After his military service, George studied accounting and business law at Benjamin Franklin University and information technology (IT) at Charles County Community College. He also began his long and successful career in IT. He worked at the Library of Congress, the United States Treasury Department, the District of Columbia Department of Employment Services, and Northrup Grumman. He retired from government service in 2000 but continued to work for Northrup Grumman until 2013. Throughout his professional career, George received numerous awards and honors for meritorious service. He also played recreational softball with government agency teams where he worked.
George is survived by his high school classmate and devoted wife, Vivian Whalen Brown; two daughters, Lisa Brown of Columbia, Maryland, and Kelly Ross (Kipling) of Washington, DC; son, Brian Brown of Columbia, Maryland; sister, Mary Catherine Brown Lumpkin of Lawrenceville, Georgia; five grandchildren, Briana Alexa Brown, Bryce Alexander Brown, Bailey Len Ross, Marley Alexis Ross, and Steeley Vivianne Ross. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, their husbands, and his brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Friends may visit with the family Monday, August 14th from 9:00 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, 201 St. Mary's Avenue La Plata, MD. Interment immediately to follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, La Plata, MD.
