George James Bogans (Age 75) of Bryans Road, Maryland.
George James Bogans, age 75, of Bryans Road, Maryland died Tuesday evening, August 18, at his home surrounded by his
loving wife of 52 years, Gloris Bogans and his sister-in-law, Carroll Ellis. George was born January 30, 1940 and raised in
the NE quadrant of Washington, DC. He was the eldest son of 11 children born to the late Junius (Bogans) Twitty and
Wachestene Gleeton Robinson, a responsibility that he did not take lightly. He was known to family and friends as
"Bogans" or "Gans," but to his children he was affectionately called, "Daddy."
As a Native Washingtonian, George and his family lived in the Deanwood neighborhood on 49th street. The neighborhood
was once home to Nannie Helen Burroughs, an early civil rights leader and the founder of the National Training School for
Women and Girls. Marvin Gaye was also born and raised in this same neighborhood. George and his siblings matriculated
through the DC School System. Upon completion of his formal education at Spingarn High School, George joined the Army
taking boot camp at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. George entered the Army towards the end of the Korean
Conflict. He was proud of serving his country, as well as being able to help provide for his mother. He always sent his war
bonds home.
After being discharged from the Army, George returned to his home in Washington, DC. He became an employee of the
Government Printing Office (GPO) in September of 1961 where he served as Head Offset Web Pressman until his
retirement in 1996. He also became a Certified TV Technician.
George was very passionate about his family, his friends, and his entertainment. As a parent he had little tolerance for
foolishness or disobedience. One of his famous sayings was, "Baby, you gotta use common sense!" He enjoyed board games
and loved to whip his children in a mean game of Monopoly. When he was winning (which was most of the time) he teased
them immensely calling them, "Chump Charlie Carr" whoever that was. He appreciated the time he spent during the
holidays, reunions and travelling to visit family and friends.
The "Crew" that Bogans kept frequent company with were William Burwell, Vincent Freeman (deceased), James Hall,
Lawrence Saunders, Donald Green, Ronald Green, and Freddie Ballard (deceased). These men were life-long friends of
Bogans from his secondary school days, the Army and working at the GPO.
After work, George was a "Man About Town" and was not easily to be influenced by anyone. He had a style of dress that
was all his own. His favorite pastimes were singing in his mellow tenor voice the tunes of The Temptations, The Whispers,
and other artists of his day as well as frequent cabarets, clubs and parties in the area and New York. His favorite Gospel
artists were the Voices of Supreme and Walter Hawkins & Family.
Other activities he enjoyed were: watching football, playing tennis, maintaining a clean car, and a well-manicured yard.
His favorite movies were The Godfather, The Ten Commandments, all the James Bond classics, and The Good, the Bad, and
the Ugly.
His dear friend Lawrence Saunders introduced George to the Seventh-day Sabbath Truth. Through this relationship, George
relayed the Bible truth to his whole family that led to the conversion of his wife, mother, sisters, and in-laws. Sadly he did
not accept Christ at that time. In 2002, George Bogans surrendered his life to the Lord. After intense Bible study, he joined
his wife and children and was baptized by Pastor Will Smith (Community Praise Seventh-day Adventist Church) under the
leadership of Pastor Henry Wright.
For the past couple of years George's health was in decline and he never fully recovered. Those who are comforted with the
hope of seeing him at the second coming of Christ include his loving wife, Gloris, his daughters Paris Boger, and Crystal
Hollingsworth (Robert) and his son, George Bogans (Sybil), his grandchildren, Emmanuel Boger, Robert Hollingsworth, III,
Paris Amber Hollingsworth, Khalil Bogans, Malachi Bogans, his siblings Bette Jackson, Franklin Bogans (deceased), Donald
Bogans (deceased), June Williams, Michael Bogans, Gloria Jackson (Alan), Herbert Bogans (Van), Reginald Bogans
(Elizabeth), Cheryl Bogans, Thomas Robinson, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
