IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Furman
Hill
April 1, 1942 – January 8, 2024
Furman Hill was born on April 1, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama, to Tommie Mae Witherspoon and Howard Houston Hill. He accepted Christ at an early age. He received his primary and secondary education in the Birmingham public schools system where he met the love of his life, Christine Stenson, in the second grade.
Furman courted Christine through elementary and high school with her sometimes bringing him bag lunches and him escorting her to their junior and senior proms. Upon graduation from high school Furman and Christine parted ways, with him attending classes at Tuskegee Institute and then joining the U.S. Air Force and her entering nursing school both pursuing their own interests and experiences. In 1965 they reconnected and on June 6, 1965 they were united in holy matrimony.
As a Medical Services Technician in the Air Force, Furman served his country with tours in Japan, England and finally San Antonio, Texas before he was honorably discharged. Furman went on to become a Physician's Assistant being one of the first African Americans to be accepted and complete the Physicians Associate Program in Medical Science at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia where he obtained an Associates Degree in Medical Science on December 11, 1973. He had a successful career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, eventually serving as an Associate Warden at the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri. After moving to Clinton, MD in 1987, Furman continued his federal employment and went on to join the U.S. Army National Guard retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer on April 18, 2002, receiving several meritorious service medals along the way.
Furman loved the Lord and his church family. He was ordained as a Deacon at Washington Avenue Baptist Church, Springfield, Missouri in 1986 and later became the Chairman of the Deacon Board at Antioch Baptist Church of Clinton, MD. He accepted his call to the ministry on March 21, 1999. He served as an Associate Pastor at Antioch Baptist Church of Clinton, leading the Prison Ministry and the Mission's Ministry at the Central Union Mission with Rev. Bobby Cato. He was an Instructor for Antioch's Bible Institute and held monthly bible study with his community neighbors.
Furman loved his family. He was very protective of his three daughters, often intimidating any male callers and visitors by displaying his many guns. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing and barbecuing for his family. He prided himself on his smoked turkeys that he prepared each holiday and you could always find him enjoying his favorite selection of music - the Temptations, O'Jays & Commodores.
Before his illness, Furman loved to travel, enjoying many cruises with his wife and annual family trips to Florida. He had a passion for reuniting his family and researching his family history with the help of his wife. Furman leaves to carry on his legacy his wife of 58 years, Christine; 3 daughters Traci (Raymond), Angela (Clarence) and April (James); 5 granddaughters Christina, Kiara, Kayla, Aniya and Jayla and 2- great-grandsons Cayden and Ethan. He will be missed by his niece Staci (Tim) of Columbus, Ohio and nephew Thaddeus, his oldest living cousin Jaratha Hill Walker of Lansing, Michigan as well as a host of other cousins, friends and family.
