Obituary

Frank Bernard Slater, Sr., (75) of Washington, D.C.

Frank Bernard Slater, Sr., affectionately called Mickey, was born, October 31, 1944 to John Frederic Slater, Sr. and Rosa Thomas Slater in Pomonkey, Maryland. Frank received his education in the Charles County public school system, graduating from Pomonkey High School in 1962.  Frank peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday April 5, 2020 in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Mickey attended Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Marbury, Maryland, received Christ in his life and was baptized at an early age. In the summer of 1984, he married his best friend, Frances Gatling. He was an absolutely wonderful person, very helpful and would go out of his way to help others. It did not matter the time of day or if it was the middle of the night, if you called Mickey he would come without hesitation.

Mickey was a member of the Arabian Knights Motorcycle Club, Washington, DC since 1981 and a member of the Twelve Step Fellowship since 1979. His hobbies were, racing motorcycles and cars, fishing, boating, hunting, tinkering, fabricating, inventing, skiing and building go-karts. He could fix almost anything on land and water and if he could not fix it, he would tell you, "You need to take it somewhere else."

Mickey paved the way and created opportunities that would establish motorcycle racing as a professional sport for blacks in many states, breaking all racial barriers with his pure talent of building the fastest race cars and motorcycles. Because of racism, Mickey led the way for his family team to convert from racing cars to racing motorcycles. He and his family team had the fastest cars in Maryland. Today, motorcycle drag racing is a billion-dollar industry.

He worked as a Machinist, Mechanic, Dump Truck Driver and Inventor. Mickey was employed by Raytheon Aerospace Technologies, Sunoco, John Driggs Trucking and he was also a business owner.

Mickey was proud to have lived to see all the kids lives he touched grow up to be successful, in their own right. His life was not his own, he truly lived for others, especially the under privileged.

Mickey was preceded in death by his parents and sons, Frank Slater, Jr. and Kwansi Gatling.

He leaves to cherish precious memories, his loving wife, Frances Gatling, children;
