Evelyn Alice Swann was born on October 23, 1923 in Nanjemoy, Maryland. She was the second child born to the late Lillian "Big Momma" (Carroll) Swann and the late Norman Swann, Sr. Evelyn closed her eyes to eternal rest on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at her son's home in Bowie, Maryland.
In her youth, Evelyn spent most of her time on a farm in Chicamuxen, Maryland with her paternal grandparents, the late Mary Ellen and Frank Swann. Evelyn joined the Alexander United Methodist Church located in Chicamuxen at a very young age.
Evelyn returned home to Nanjemoy when she was eighteen years old. Evelyn loved the Lord. She was baptized at Mount Hope Baptist Church by the late Rev. Rodney L. Young in August 1960. She was very devoted and dedicated to her church until her health began to fail. She was a member of the Senior Choir, the Missionary Board, Pastor's Aide Club and served as Chairwoman of the Decorating Committee.
Evelyn received her education through the Charles County Public School System. She was employed at the Naval Powder Factory in Indian Head, Maryland (now known as the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division). While employed there, she received numerous awards and recognitions for her superior performance. She retired from the United States Federal Government as a Math Technician on November 30, 1990 after serving thirty one years.
In her pastime, Evelyn could be found in her yard gardening. She loved tending to her flowers and rosebushes. She also loved to bake delicious homemade desserts and she enjoyed traveling. Family was important to Evelyn. In earlier years, the family would enjoy sitting under the big apple tree in Big Momma's yard.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by six brothers; Robert Lee, George, Clifton (Shad), Roy, Lawrence (Lewis) and Albert (Scottie) Swann, Sr.; and two sisters, Genevieve and Merline Swann.
Evelyn was the proud mother of four children, Purnell "JP", Clarence "Wayne"(deceased), Barbara Jean (Newman) Bannister and Charles "Bill" Newman.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories, her daughter-in-law, Cheryl who unselfishly cared for her; five grandchildren, Evelyn Charlene, Monique, Novel, Monica and Marcus, and a number of great-grandchildren; three sisters, Audrey, Renetta and Mary Everdine; two brothers, Harold, Sr., and Norman, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Doris "Sugar", Irene, Doris "DD" and Mary (Tang) Swann; brothers-in-law, Joseph Penny, Sr., and Reverend Earl Britt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be at Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 8705 Gilroy Road, Nanjemoy, MD 20662, on Saturday, June 18, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Funeral Services and Interment will follow.
