IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elvira Cecelia
Langford
December 23, 1922 – July 1, 2021
Elvira C. Langford peacefully passed away July 1, 2021.
Elvira Celica Langford was the 2 nd of seven children born to the late James W. Clark, Sr. and Eva Elnora Clark on December 23, 1922, in Bryans Road, Maryland.
Elvira received her education in the Charles County Public School system and graduated from Pomonkey High School in 1939. She continued her education and graduated from Princess Anne College (now University of Maryland, Eastern Shore) in 1944, with a degree in Home Economics.
In 1943, during her time at Princess Anne College, Elvira met Henry Langford through one of her classmates who was his next-door neighbor. They were married in Bryans Road on December 1, 1945. "Lang and Vi", as they were affectionately known, were married for 61 years. They have one child, Patricia, from this union.
After graduating from college Elvira taught home economics for one year on the Eastern Shore and then moved to the Washington, DC area. She worked for the Census Bureau for more than 30 years as a statistical assistant. Elvira retired from the Housing Division of the Census Bureau in 1981 after receiving numerous performance awards.
Elvira was a lifelong member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church where her mother, grandfather and other relatives were foundational members. She worked in the Metropolitan United Methodist Women's ministry. Elvira especially loved working as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also enjoyed working for the Flower ministry with her sister, Phelicia Boyer, where they picked up flowers and placed them on the altar of the church every week, rain or shine.
Elvira was a dedicated member of the Charles County, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She enjoyed going to the Charles County Senior Center and helping other seniors. Elvira loved cooking, participating in family reunions and cookouts, and playing pinochle with her friends and family. Everyone that knew her could count on receiving a special card from her on their birthday. She would not miss one Pomonkey High School reunion where she faithfully represented the Class of 1939.
In her later years at the Waldorf Center, Elvira developed a love for word puzzles, bingo, bowling, cornhole, and arts and crafts. She was even a "Warrior" on the Waldorf Center volleyball team. Elvira loved attending their weekly church services and made sure she didn't miss any of their wonderful and engaging activities. Due to the excellent care and love provided by everyone at the Waldorf Center, Elvira could be seen all over the Center greeting people, making new friends, letting her light shine and singing, Oh, How I Love Jesus.
Elvira was a faithful wife and loving mother. Most importantly, she had a personal relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Elvira was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry Langford; sisters Jeannette Thurmond, Winifred Sechrest, Phelicia Boyer and Sophonia Gaston; brother James Clark, Jr.; sister-in-law Edna Clark; brothers-in-law, Lennie Thurmond, John Sechrest, Ralph Boyer and William Gaston.
