IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elouise Letitia
Hudnell
April 19, 1939 – February 21, 2025
Hudnell, Elouise Letitia (85) of Clinton, Maryland.
Elouise Letitia Hudnell was born on April 19, 1939 to Evelyn Florence Frazier and Edward Benjamin Harrison Sr. in the District of Columbia. Growing up in Washington D. C. she attended the local schools such as Garrison Elementary and Cordozo High School before starting her work career as an elevator operator at the Harrington Hotel in downtown D.C.
While working as an elevator operator her mother introduced her to a friend, Odella, who the family affectionately called Aunt Sweetsie. Aunt Sweetsie introduced Elouise to her nephew Horace David Hudnell Jr. and the romance began. Elouise and Horace fell in love, got married and started a family. From this union came four children: Artherol "Pete", Shanteen "Teen", Lionel "Lonnie" and Monica "Nickie" Hudnell.
Elouise and Horace along with the children lived the life of a military family, traveling to various cities and towns as Horace served his country in the United States Air Force. Elouise often shared stories of how cold and snowy it was in Limestone, Maine where they measured the snow almost always in feet rather than inches and could open the door or look outside on a given day and see a wall of snow.
One time in particular while she was expecting to deliver baby Monica and there was so much snow on the ground that they had to be escorted to the military base hospital by a snow plow only to get there and find out it was false labor. After settling back in DC she dedicated herself to raising the kids and for a few years became a proud member of the D.C. Les Gemmes, an all female organization dedicated to helping others with their social, political and community efforts.
Elouise began her spiritual journey as an adult around 1989 at the Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and served the membership as an usher for several years. She then became a member of The Way of the Cross Church and participated in various activities and events with the sisterhood. In most recent years as her health was starting to decline she came under the spiritual care of Abounding Grace Church (now Kingdom Believers Church And Fellowship) where her youngest son Lionel serves as the Pastor and where she enjoyed the fellowship and closeness of the people.
Anyone who knew her knew that she liked to have fun, laugh and joke all the time. Whenever she would laugh it usually ended with her signature words, "Oh, Lordy, mmm...mmm...mmm", or simply just "Oh, Lordy." At holiday times Elouise loved to prepare her homemade cornbread stuffings that almost everyone loved. She was also known for making good deviled eggs and good spaghetti. They were all staples at our family gatherings.
Elouise is preceded in death by her late husband Horace David Hudnell Jr. in 1999, and son Artherol Serrell Hudnell (Anita) in 2021. She is survived by sons Shanteen Ellis Hudnell (Ulrike) of Nettatal, Germany, Lionel Arron Hudnell (Lisa) of Clinton, MD and daughter Monica Evelyn Hudnell of Clinton, MD. Six grandchildren Alexis, Shannon, Michelle, Bryton, Donovan and Jocelyn. Two great grandchildren, Gabrielle and Christopher Jr. Siblings Melvin, Andy, Paula Wanda, Francis (deceased), Margaret (deceased), Earl (deceased), Ellis (deceased), Edward (deceased), Cecil (deceased), Thaddeus (deceased), Darlene (deceased) along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Elouise is remembered by many as a wonderful person, true angel and sweet woman. She will truly be missed.
