Nelson, Eliza Virginia (Age 84) of Upper Marlboro, MD

Eliza Nelson was the daughter of the late Phillip and Mary Stewart, born November 22, 1935 in Cedar Heights, Maryland.  In 1954, at an early age, Eliza was united in marriage to Arthur Gilbert. From that union, four children were born, however, the marriage ended in divorce.

Eliza married Edward Nelson in 1982.  He preceded her in death in 2013.

She is survived by her two sons, Arthur Gilbert, Jr and Kenneth Gilbert both of Maryland; two daughters, Shirley Gilbert of St Paul, Minnesota and Karen Gilbert Dale of Salisbury, Maryland; two stepsons Larry (deceased) and Terry Nelson of Washington DC. She also survived by five grandchildren Brian, Keith Arthur Gilbert, III, Nicholas and Stacey Dale; two step granddaughters Melissa and Katherine Jenkins, four great-grandchildren, Nakia, Jemel, Ny`elle Dale and Caron Jones; two brothers, Martin and Samuel Stewart of Maryland; sister Rosa Lewis of Washington, DC.; daughter-in-law, Diane Gilbert; son-in-law, Chester Dale; sisters-in-law Mildred Stewart and Bernice Hillard of San Antonio, Texas, a loving and devoted niece, Diana Satterwhite and a host of nieces, nephews and relatives.

Eliza worked as a Secretary at the Department of Agriculture before joining Freedman's /Howard University Hospital for 28 1/2 as a Secretary, Correspondence Supervisor, and an Administrative Assistant to the Director of Medical Records. When not working, she enjoyed playing Pokeno and Tonk.

She was a very hard worker and concentrated on rearing her children to be responsible young adults.

Eliza`s journey on earth was completed on February 18, 2020.

Her viewing will be held from 10:00am until time of service 11:00am on Saturday, February 29, 2020, Thornton Funeral Home, P. A., 3439 Livingston Road, Indian Head, Maryland 20640.  Interment National Harmony Memorial Park, Hyattsville, Maryland.
