Obituary

LEE, ELFRIEDA MABEL (AGE 96) OF WASHINGTON, DC

Elfrieda Mabel Lee departed this life peacefully on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at George Washington University Hospital, Washington DC.  She was born on August 7, 1922  in Charles County, Maryland to the late Charles W. Atlee, Sr. and Mable I. Atlee.  She was preceded in death by her late husband, James Edward Lee, 12 siblings and two daughters, Cheryl Ellen Lee and Rubia L. Moore.  She is survived by a daughter, Darlia McPherson: a son, Gerald Alan Lee (Nancy) of Evans, GA; four grandchildren, Kia Lee, Danique McPherson, Sean Alan Lee (Kelly) of Murphy, Texas and Jeremy Alan Lee; a great grandson, Connor Alan Lee, one son-in-law, Edward Moore and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Elfrieda was educated in the Charles County Public School System, graduating from Pomonkey High School class of 1939.  Upon graduation, she moved to Washington DC to further her education and seek employment.  She successfully completed several courses at what is now Strayer University.  She then began her career in Federal Service, completing 34 years of service.  Her federal positions included the Department of Defense at the Pentagon, the US Department of Treasury and the U.S. Army Material Command.  Her last position was Supervisory Travel Assistant, U.S. Army Development and Readiness Command.  Elfrieda retired in February 1979.  She received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career and the Army Certificate of Service upon her retirement.

In the Spring of 1942, Elfrieda met James Edward Lee.  The two were joined in marriage on May 31, 1942.  Their loving and devoted union lasted a total of 45 years until the passing of his death on November 30, 1987.  Elfrieda was christened, nurtured and raised in the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, Pomonkey, Maryland.  In the early 1940's, she was baptized at the Providence Baptist Church located in Southwest Washington, DC. There she served on the Usher Board and attended Sunday School.  In 1955 she joined and became an active member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in several capacities to include Sunday School Teacher, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the Progressive Club.  She remained a loyal and dedicated member for 63 years.

Elfrieda was very active in her community as a Girl Scout Den Mother for many years.  She also participated in several Ward 7 community events and activities.

Upon retirement she continued to volunteer in her community and church.  Elfrieda loved tending to her flower garden, sewing, baking, traveling near and far with friends and family.  Every morning she would read from her Bible, Our Daily Bread Magazine, and the Daily Word.  The Washington Post Newspaper was also a favorite read for her.

She attended many kids sporting events to watch her young family members perform, all the while why cheering them on.

Elfrieda willingly shared her knowledge, good judgment and wisdom in a loving and sometimes humorous manner.  Momma Lee, Mother, Aunt Elfrieda, Sis. Lee, Frieda, Grandma, or whatever fond name you called her, will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.

God saw the road was getting rough, the hills were hard to climb.  He gently closed her eyes and whispered Peace Be Thine.

Love you always
