On Friday, December 20, 2024, Earleen Ludd peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord. Born Earleen Sumpter on June 26, 1937, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, she was the beloved daughter of the late Emma Lou and Herbert Sumpter.
Earleen was preceded in death by her siblings, Ida Mae Brown and Herbert L. Sumpter (Sonny), as well as her cherished husband, Andrew Ivory Ludd, and her daughter, Kenette T. Ludd Zeigler.
Earleen's formative years were spent in Washington, DC., where she graduated from Cardoza High School. Fueled by her passion for helping others, she pursued a career in nursing and earned her LPN license from the Washington Hospital School of Nursing. Earleen dedicated 35 years of her life to the Washington Hospital Center, ultimately serving as Unit Manager until her retirementA devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church for over 20 years, Earleen served on the Usher Board and President of the Senior Ministry. She was an avid, experienced, and award-winning knitter and crocheter and was known to always have a project in progress. Almost a lost art, she patiently taught classes at the senior center and to anyone who asked. Many of her handmade afghans have been given as gifts and remain a wonderful legacy of the love and warmth she shared with relatives and friends.
She was a devoted mother, incredible family member, and source of joy and light to the multitude of friends and anyone who knew her. She enjoyed the outdoors and shopping, and found great pleasure in chatting, laughing, and joking with everyone.
Earleen's legacy will be cherished by her daughter Linda Sumpter; sons-in-law Myron Staton and Lonnie Zeigler; sisters-in-law Geraldine Sumpter and Rev. Jane Oliver; grandsons Dray Sumpter (Tarah) and Remount Sumpter; granddaughter Aisha Zeigler; great-grandchildren Deondray, Taray, Daysean, Rhalif, Dontae, Domonick, and Kennady; and one great, great-grandchild, Koi. There are host of other relatives and friends who are too many to name.
Earleen's spirit will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Friends may visit with the family Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 10am until time of Funeral Service, 11am at Macedonia Baptist Church, 2645 Marshall Hall Road, Bryans Road, Maryland 20616. Interment, Heritage Memorial Cemetery, 13472 Popular Hill Road, Waldorf, Maryland 20601.
