Obituary
Dorothy Mae Thorne Wilkins, known to many as "Dot and Mimi", was born in Washington, D.C. on January 29, 1941. Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt and cousin departed this earthly life suddenly on Friday, March 5, 2021 to ascend to her beautiful home in Heaven where God has prepared a place for her.
Dot was the youngest child of four to the late George E. Thorne and Carrie Thorne (Lyons). In her early years, she was a very social child with many friends. After the illness of her Father her family later moved to Rocky Mount, NC. She received her formal education from Booker T. Washington High School, where she played in the marching band. She later graduated in 1959. After graduating high school, she married the late Early Odell Wilkins. From their union there were three children, a son, Rendell, and two daughters, Alicia, and Sheryl. Her family was the center of her life.
Dot worked for many years at Abbott Laboratories where she held many positions. She retired as a Quality Control Inspector in 1993. She was an extraordinary woman of strong faith and a long-time faithful member of New Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Rocky Mount NC. She was a member of the Mother's Ministry, Home Mission Ministry, Choir and Pastor's Aide Ministry. Dot enjoyed gathering with family and friends. Every year she looked forward to spending time with her family during the holidays and at reunions. She knew how to have a good time, as she had a natural talent for dancing and singing. She also enjoyed shopping and traveling in her spare time. She had a great sense of humor. Her bold and honest personality will always be remembered.
We will all miss her dearly but have comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on forever through her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Aster Thorne, her son, Rendell Wilkins, and her daughter, Sheryl Wilkins Parker.
Left with unspeakable grief, but cherished memories: her daughter, Alicia Wilkins Kenley (Fred), brother, George Thorne, sister, Helen Parks, sister-in-law, Alice Hart, seven grandchildren, Chante Wilkins, Sherrell Reid, Rendell Wilkins Jr., Frederick Kenley, Cara Kenley, Catherine Parker, Chelse Parker, six great-grandchildren, Keiontrez, Shamari, Alaya, Rendell (III), Harper, Riley and host of loving relatives and friends.
Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, March 16, 2021 from 10:00am until time of Service 11:00am at Fort Foote Baptist Church, 8310 Fort Foote Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744. Interment, Resurrection Cemetery, 8000 Woodyard Road, Clinton, Maryland 20735.
