Obituary

Doris Theresa (Thompson) Proctor (Age 73) of White Plains, Maryland.

Doris T. Proctor was born May 3, 1944 to James Lee and Mary L. Thompson.  Doris attended Bel Alton High School in Charles County where she excelled in her studies.

Doris met her husband, her friend and her lifelong companion, Paul W. Proctor in 1961.  Shortly after he had returned home from the Air Force, Doris' sister Ellen encouraged Paul to take her sister out on a date. It seems Ellen was right in her match making ability; Paul and Doris were married for 56 blissful years and had four beautiful children.

Doris was employed with Sears for many years where she had a blossoming career.  She began assisting in retail where her stellar customer service was noted, and she was promoted to Sales Associate, a role she excelled in for many years.  Staying with Sears, Doris later took the role of Home Improvement Consultant, where she was highly respected for her talents.   This was a job that she thoroughly enjoyed, because she was giving others advice and recommending how they should spend their money.

Doris had many talents and passions.  She had a knack for fashion and to say she loved to shop is an understatement. Nordstrom was Doris' favorite store and she spared no expense in choosing for well-made, fabulous clothes.  So much so, she's left Paul with four closets full of those classy threads.  Doris was a naturally talented seamstress and she loved making clothes, especially dresses for her daughter.  With her talents she made a number of costumes for her children's school plays.  One might say, she really got into her craft.  Once she made a spectacular elf costume for Robert; it was so detailed and elaborate, right down to the authentic elf shoes. No one noticed the rest of the cast.  She loved sewing so much that she even had her husband picking up the needle and thread on occasions.

Doris also loved the water and sailing.  She and Paul would spend countless hours on the water, she especially enjoyed sailing on their 27-foot sailboat, "Felicia Faye".  Doris delighted in sailing so much that she would make sure she packed plenty to eat, so she could ask Paul to extend their outing.  One of her favorite things to do was spontaneously taking a road trip to Ocean City.  After a long day at work Doris and Paul would jump in the car and head to the beach for a long, fun-filled weekend.

Perhaps being a mother was her greatest joy.  Doris was beyond proud of her children and was often heard bragging about them.  Raising them, she wanted to be sure they were able to contribute to society and if nothing else to care for themselves; she even ensured those boys of hers could cook!  She beamed with joy over her nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  When they came around, her face lit with joy.  She was also a mother to many felines, she loved cats and they loved her. There was a time Doris cared for eight kitties at once.

Doris peacefully passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at her home in White Plains, Maryland surrounded by her family.  She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her best friend and beloved husband of 56 years, Paul W. Proctor; her pride and joy – her children, daughter, Cynthia Kilson, and sons, Winfield Proctor, Timothy Proctor (Becky) and Robert Proctor (Carmine); nine beautiful grandchildren, four great grandchildren and her beloved feline friend, Tigger.
