Obituary

Donald Edward Hall, 81 of Newburg, Maryland.

Donald Edward Hall, affectionately known as Don, Bro. Don, and (Donnie by his PA family), hails from York, PA, becoming a resident of Charles County for over 50 years. The eldest of nine siblings born to the late Helen Katherine Hall Brown and Bishop Scott (Louisiana). Coming into the knowledge of the LORD at an early age, he served as a youth in his then local Assembly, Shiloh Baptist Church.

Donald served his Country valiantly in the United States Air Force, where he found his "Career Calling" as a Military Policeman (MP) and served in the Korean War. He spent a number of years in Japan. Upon returning, he continued his Military Service at Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, Maryland. Furthering his education by earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and an Associate's Degree in Accounting. He reached his Career Legacy at Naval Ordnance (now NSWC), Indian Head, Maryland, where he retired as the FIRST African American Chief of Police, opening the door for many other minorities (including women of different races) to serve within the Security Department. Post-retirement, Donald established and Chaired the First Union for the Security Civilian Employees.

It was during his tenure, however, at Andrews that he met and married his beloved wife of 57 years, Joan Key. To this union was born one biological daughter, Pastor Sonja Hall (Mahoney). Nevertheless, they continued together to parent a community of children until their united departure and being gifted uniquely, yet differently, complemented each other in the powerful union they formed serving church and community.

Brother Hall was known for many active roles, among them was; Founder/Manager, Soul Savers, Inc, Founder/Drill Sgt., -- The Black Hawks Drill Team, Founder/Coach the Black Hawks Basketball Team, Lay Leader and Lay Minister, Shiloh Community U.M. Church, Chair, Admin. Counsel/Chair, Finance – Shiloh Comm. U.M. Church, United Methodist Men's Choir, Shiloh Choir, 51 yr. Member – W.A.C. Hughes Lodge #1053 (where he fulfilled many roles including 20+ years as Financial Secretary), 30+ yr. Member – American Legion Post, Pomonkey, Maryland. Through these and other services, Brother Hall provided many opportunities for travel for the Community's Youth, won many championships and tournaments on the East Coast and with the Soul Savers traveled far and wide proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in song. For many years they were chosen as the recurring Gospel Group to open for the 1970's Gospel TV Show, "Spread A Little Sunshine" after having recorded their first album, "Gone the Last Mile of the Way." In his latter years, the Apple of His Eye became his service as Teacher of Bible Study 101 at Shiloh. He committed many hours of study and prayer during private hours, first to align himself and then to teach as "One Called" to bring forth enlightenment, understanding and an in-depth knowledge of The Truth – not only the written Word, but relationship with the TRUTH Himself in Jesus Christ.

Donald/Don/Donnie/Bro. Hall by nature was a very private, yet receptive individual. Though he, like his wife, did not crave spotlight, fame, or glamour, he was chosen to receive it and she became the rock of structure and support to insure he flowed judiciously and well with Excellence in ALL that had been Divinely Entrusted to him and thusly he did.

He leaves to celebrate and carry on his legacy one son, Raymond Bruce Kirkland (York, PA), two daughters, Lotus G. Riley (York, PA), Pastor Sonja L. Hall Mahoney (Colonial Beach, VA), one special son, Michael A. Mahoney (Newburg, MD), one special daughter, Kimberly D. Lawson (Colonial Beach, VA), four very close grandchildren, Retired Sgt.
