Delores Mathis Manigan

Delores Mathis Manigan was born in Washington, D.C. on June 25, 1935. She passed away peacefully at Morningside House of Laurel Maryland, where she received loving care and support. She was 91 Years old.

Delores Mathis Manigan was born on June 25, 1935, to the late Rebecca and George Mathis. Known affectionately as Grammy, Grandma, Mother, Ma and affectionately known as Miss Dee.

Delores was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She lived a life of dignity, grace, joy and generosity.

Delores was one of three children of the late George and Rebecca Mathis. She was also blessed with two sisters. In addition to her parents, Delores was preceded in death by her brothers George and Jerome Mathis and sister Aldean Gardner.

Delores was married to Walter L Grant, Jr. She had three children from that union, Sheila, Stephanie and Steven.

Delores married Moses J. Manigan, September 2, 1967. (Otherwise, known as Jerome). Enjoying 53 years of marriage, they parented as a blended family.

Delores graduated from Armstrong High School in Washington, DC in 1953. After graduation, she attended Spring Garden Institute studying dressmaking and design.

Delores was an active member of Florida Avenue Baptist in Washington, DC for many years. In later years she attended FBCG in Upper Marlboro, Md with family where she enjoyed the services and Senior Activities.

She worked for Embassy Dairy, Capital Cigar and MTI Construction Co., Inc., all in the DMV area. She was diligent in working on those Receivables and Payables. In fact, she left no stone unturned as far as making sure she had all the backup documentation. She would hunt you down!

Some of her loves were sewing, baking, playing bingo, dancing and listening to music. She also enjoyed preserving fresh produce from Jerome’s garden, as well as traveling.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Toya Jones, Delores’s beloved caregiver and best friend. Toya, her husband Carlton, and their family became an extension of our own, surrounding Delores (Miss Dee) with affection, support, and genuine companionship. Miss Dee lit up whenever Toya entered the room, and that same joy appeared during their video calls and long conversations. Toya often said Miss Dee was her “ride‑and‑die,” her “BFF” and that bond became one of the greatest comforts of her later years. We are deeply grateful for the love Toya and her family shared with her.

Delores leaves to cherish her memories, three children, Sheila Miller (Benard), Stephanie Davis and Steven Grant; three grandchildren Michelle Gailliard (Jeffrey), Angela and Tamela Davis. One sister Phyllis Mathis, one sister-in-law Ogarita J Henderson, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, September 15, 2026 from 10am until time of service at 11am at Union Bethel AME Church (6810 Floral Park Road, Brandywine, MD 20613).  Interment immediately to follow at Quantico National Cemetery (Triangle, VA).
